Prot: Spell Hit?Follow

As Prot, is Spell Hit really all that great a thing to have? The only spells (to my knowledge) that I will be using that rely on Spell Hit would be Judgment and Exorcism. If I'm not mistaken, Avenger's Shield uses Melee Hit to determine misses. Consecration and reflected damage don't calculate To Hit at all, and since SoR piggybacks on melee swings it would obviously rely on Melee Hit.

The issue is becoming more and more prevalent in my mind since end-game Pally Tanking gear seems to be using item budget on Spell Hit at the expense of avoidance stats.

Namely, I'm wrestling with the idea of spending badges on one of the new tanking chest pieces:

Chestplate of Stoicism or Shattrath Protectorate's Breastplate

I'd hate to pass up more Spell Damage, but that's a loss of 25 Defense Rating and 34 Dodge Rating just to gain 60 Spell Damage and some Spell Hit. In my books, the avoidance wins out. But at this rate, I will be losing much Spell Damage. I'm already seeing my guilds DPS begin to overpower my ability to generate threat as they continue to gear up with more and more damage and I gear up with less and less Spell Damage.

That IS a lot of avoidance.

I'd say the old chest piece is the superior one for general use. If I had to choose one of the new ones, I'd be using the Chestplate of Stoicism for most things. If you have a mass surplus of badges, it doesnt hurt to have the Protectorate's Breastplate sitting around for Spell Damage sets though.

Most of your abilities are on melee hit mechanics. This includes Avenger's Shield and Righteous Defense. Spell Hit effects Judgements, Exorcism, Seal of Vengeance procs (not Righteousness though, it always procs when you hit, therefore melee hit will benefit it) and the first tick of Consecration. Understand though that the first tick of Consecration serves to shock Rogues out of stealth and create the "I've just been hit by Consecration" animation that happens on surrounding enemies. It does not do any damage, and even if the first tick is resisted you will get 8 full ticks of damage.

In general, Spell Hit has very little use. It will have a positive impact on threat generation, but it will be so negligable that the itemization budged dedicated to Spell Hit could be used somewhere else to greater effect.

By "old chest piece" do you mean the Chestguard of the Stoic Guardian?

Yes, that would be the "old" chestpiece.
