So I am level 70 and thinking of gettng a new pet. How does the pet gain levels if you arent getting XP from combat? Can you still level a lower level pet? Will it take twice as long or is it even worth it?

your pet will still gain xp as long as the mob would normally give you xp. You can level a low level pet if you want, but it will take a long time to level and in the end will be the same pet as if you tamed one around 68,69. /clap for me saying the word "level" 3 times in one run-on sentence.

As long as the mob is 'green' or higher to you, as if you would be still getting xp if you weren't level capped, your pet will gain xp and level up. It is not the level of the mob in comparison to your pet that is important. It is in comparison to you, the hunter.

and the short answer is it is really up to you whether you want to invest the time to level a new pet and work on the loyalty. If you're pets that you currently have are tanking fine for you, then I wouldn't waste my time, I'd spend that time working on gear and preparing to raid if that's what you plan on doing

One relativly easy way I have found to level up pets at 70 is to run regular istances. If you have a decent enough group where you can bring in your low level pet without having to worry it will gain some decent exp.

Your new pet will get XP from any mob you kill thats green or higher to you.
But you will be basically playing with out a pet for a while, since he'll be too low to do any good dmg, and you will be tanking the mobs in short range.

I did something like that and found that Nagrand was the best place, for me at least, to do this.
Mobs are green, can pick one at a time, and if you're a Skinner :) all those Clefthoofs to skin.

It will take time, loads of it, until the pet can be more useful.

At 70 all species pets are the same (except on what skills you give him), cats will be cats, wolfs will be wolfs.

If its worth it? Thats up to you. Do you like your pet?, Do you want a new pet, to have 1 dps, 1 tank? Do you want a cooler looking pet :) ?

Its true, but if the pet you're leveling is too low :
1- might not get the best exp (same as if you were leveling, mobs with in a certain range of your lvl will give you better XP then mobs way above your lvl, might even give you less)
2- will have to watch that agro range
3- if pet gets hit, AoE or other wise, usually 1 hit kill. So be ready to rez him and FEED a lot

Hope that helps

Actually the pet's aggro range is relative to your level.

1. You kill faster and more steadily in an instance than when you solo things with a sub-par pet. Not to mention that you are fighting mostly mobs your own level, not green mobs. Thus, more xp for your pet.
2. The aggro range is dependent on your level, not the pet's level.
3. If the pet gets hit it means that you are personally too close to the boss/mob. You don't send in a pet that's underleveled for the instance, you keep it at your side.

Instance leveling pets is a faster, safer and more reliable than soloing green mobs.

guess i missed the part where it says it depends on the hunter's lvl.

thanks for the correction

Since your in Outlands the best thing you would want to do is go after those elite pets that you can actually tame since they are very good and can output a lot of damage. And getting a lower level pet is a waste of time so don't bother unless you get it for looks. Depending for whatever you do for it be raiding, soloing, and or pvping you may find your pet really useful, but also it could be a great hindrance just your personal preference. You could just kite everything in the world or have your pet as cannon fodder

Posting retarded information like that isn't going to make you last long anywhere. Elite pets? They are just the same as every single other pet in the game. Some might come with some pet-skills as standard but at 70 you should already have all the petskills ready. Pet can be a hindrance? When? You might remember that the Hunter Epic quest was level 60...

Either stop posting in here or actually gain some soddin' information to share first.

Well what about taming say Broken toooth from badlands or King Bangalash from Stranglethorn. Would Bangie be any different from the cat I currently have. Was thinking of snagging him at level 43. For those who don't know he is an elite. Boars still suck lol

Hehe , i love the way threads get taken over and how some still think there are " Special " pets out there , all pets in the same family are Exactly the same except for their skins and that has been how long two years at a guess ? well anyway a long time .

I am not sure exactly how long to level a pet to 70 but even a level 3 pet takes about the same time as a level 40 as i found out for fun .

You can a get a level a kill with a level 3 pet and each 10 levels seems to take twice as long as the last 10 so up to around level 50 should be done in around a long days play , then it does get interesting as it does slow down a lot , 50 to 60 will probably take at least a day depending on how you do it , and 60 to 70 well i found it takes what seems like ages as the pet gets closer to your level but i did 60 to 61 in around 3 hours grinding , 61 to 62 was about 5 hours , at this point the pet should be able to at least do some damage and keep the mobs off you if careful , for me 62 to 63 was around a days play , as you can see it takes time to level any pet past 60 and to get to 70 well that is very slow past level 65 as after 60 each level seems to take about twice as long if not longer .

This all depends on how you do it as i guess killing level 70 mobs will level your pet faster than as i did killing level 64-65 mobs , but as a skinner and a cook it was very profitable anyway , and of course lower level mobs hurt you far less and die a lot faster.

I say pick a pet you want and as you are 70 as long as you trained all the skills from all families as i did you can have 3 pets and level the third as and when you want , this will all change though when the next expansion arrives as i am sure we will get higher pet skills so i will have to decide which pets i keep .

The answer to "is it even worth it" all depends on what you want to do , have you either a cat a ravager or a wind serpent ? these at the moment are the best pets for instances i guess , any other pet you decide on will be ok for normal use , If you want to spend some time to get a pet you like the look of then it is up to you to decide if you have that time .

I have the time so for me trying different pets is fun , but for many the rush to get into the best gear seems to take over all other things in the game.

I wish Lupos still had his shadow damage attack. That was a fun pet back when.

Yeah I had a long talk with my pet stripes(elder nightsaber). As I slept he put a claw to my throat and said if he couldn't have me as an owner then no one could. What was I to do? upset him. I think not.

So I plumped him up full or raptor flesh and mutton chops and sent him to his cave happy. :D No bangalash for me then. Thanks everyone. Anyone else experienced what I have with my pet. Word of caution...don't ditch your first pet. It will come back and haunt you. ;)

Im lvl 70 and got me the white gorilla (Uhk'loc) lvl 52 from un'goro. I missed it while levelling and decided to be patient now and get it. So 2 things i did;

1- I spec MM, no more pet tanking for you!
2- Went to Nagrand grind on Ogres for rep (Talbuk mount)

You need plenty of food and drinks...basically you don't have a pet anymore.
