Tanking Question (gear)Follow

I'm levelling a warrior mainly to use as a PvP toon, but there's a huge shortage of tanks on my server so I'd like to do that as well. I obviously know I'd have to respec for PvP and tanking, but I was wondering if I were in full S2 arena gear and S3 honor gear (what looks like I'll be able to do just grinding honor in S4) would the armor and health make up for a lack of avoidance (e.g. I'd become somewhat of a bear with warrior skills) or would I just fail miserably at tanking?
Note that this is just for heroics and maybe kara...I'm trying to figure out if I'd need 2 sets or if I could make due with 1.

you need that 490 defense to negate crits. But resilience can cover that. I'm not to ecstatically thrilled at the thought of low dodge/parry. Can you get 102.7% avoidance with SB up, and all that gear? You may need to crutch the s2 gear with some defense trinkets and some specific defense gear. The aldor chest comes to mind. Timewarden pants too. I'd difentely let the healers know what your gonna try first. You will want to get a 2nd tanking set even with s2 gear as a base. You can't replace dodge, parry and sbv with resilience.

Unfortunately apart from the shield and maybe the shoulders, the rest of the pvp gear really doesn't cut it for tanking. Especially if you are trying to do kara.

You will have to bite the bullet if you want to do both and gear up for both. Tanking gear takes a bit of effort to get, but you can be kara ready by just questing and crafting if you do it right. Every tank has to go through this process, and pvp is no shortcut.

The shield and the shoulders however are viable, simply because the other shields aren't very comparable (apart from dawnforged defender which can be better) and the pre-raid tank shoulders are fairly horrible and you will do better with the stam that comes with the pvp ones.

You can easily tank 5-mans and even some heroics in PVP gear. You'll have to work really hard to keep aggro, and you'll be doing a lot of stance dancing to hold aggro and build threat, but you can do it.

You'll have a real problem getting PUG's though, as many healers will look at your gear and spec and go "Uh, no thanks."

Higher end heroics, and Kara and beyond are not do-able in PVP gear unless you are ludicrously over-geared for the instance.

Most all tanks have multiple gear sets and do flip back and forth between specs if they like to PvP (though prot warriors can do well in the right 5-man, though even there you'll top out around 1800 rating).
