In Warcraft lore a modern Death Knight is usually a paladin who has lost their faith and pledged there alligence to the lich king and once they fall in battle they are brought back to life to serve the lich king. and paladins uphold the light so what do Death Knights uphold?

The will of the Lich King, if they're in his service.

As for the upcoming player character Death Knights that are now free to choose their own will... I guess we'll have to see.

could the same kinda of story as Sylvanas Windrunner as she broke free from the lich's power and started the forsaken.

for example, another death knight broke free from the lich's control and started to set free others but only some could be freed depending on how deep the lich king has got hold of them.

but your guess is as good as mine :P

A death knight is very similar to a pally. It's basically like a dark pally. It's a class that can wear plate and use dps spells like a warlock whereas a pally is a class that can wear plate but can heal. So they are very similar they are just on different ends of the spectrum.

Like Smallsword said, enslaved they heed to the Lich King.

When played by people, I hope they uphold kittens then smash them under their deathchargers hooves, but only after burning an orphanage and scaring old people in nursing homes.

They should be like Richard from the LFG comic, before he met the transvestite pally/hunter holy knight wannebe.

This.

Also, for those of you who don't read LFG (and why not!?), Richard is the Chief Warlock of the Brothers of Darkness, Lord of the Thirteen Hells, Master of the Bones, Emperor of the Black, Lord of the Undead, Lord of the Dance, and mayor of a little village up the coast.

Basically, he's a nearly-omnipotent, magnificently horrendous warlock. And he's funny.

Page 1, if you want to start reading now.

But I digress.

Back to the original topic, Death Knights serve the Lich King, if they're enslaved. If they regain their free will, however, then they are free to uphold what they choose. If they want, they can choose to worship Cthulhu, Allakhazam, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Invisible Pink Unicorn, or any of the other deities that the fact that I even know of their existence shows that I spend too much time online.

Edit: I phail at spleling.

To answer the starting question, more or less, Death Knights are Anti-Paladins, look it up in lore/D&D if you have no clue here. They uphold all that paladins deplore, and deplore all that paladins uphold. They are the polar opposite of paladins you could say. Granted the DKs in WoW served under the lich king, and all that entails, they should, mostly, stick to their tainted roots as an emancipated player style class. These are all assumptions and we will have to wait and see the final verdict.
