Do Prot Spec Warriors Suck at Soloing?Follow

#1 Jun 13 2008 at 5:33 AM Rating: Decent
I frequently find myself having trouble soloing quests or simply fighting a monster 2 levels over me. I only do quests with another friend my level and Being a tank I just keep the mobs off him while he unleashs hell on the mob. But the question is here. Is sucking at soloing just a part of being a prot spec warrior or am I doing something wrong?

Prot spec warriors don't generally do alot of damage very fast so its more of a who can out last the other, atmo i'm level 33 on my prot spec warrior and i'm managing to kill things 4-5 levels above my with about 30% life left.

What rotation and stances do you use when soloing?? also how up-to-date is your gear compared to your level?

Edit: Also where have you spent you talent points?

A lot of folks think that prot warriors suck at solo'ing because compared with a dps class on 1 mob they take significantly longer. What is missed is that a prot warrior can have effectively zero down time. Using concussion blow and bandaging in combat is usually all i have to do to stay at or near full health from mob to mob to mob. And even if I get 2 or 3 adds, I'm never in danger of dying.

I actually have better fury gear than prot gear, but I don't stay fury spec'ed for real solo work, just for dailies (the mobs are so wimpy that it doesn't matter). But if I'm farming motes off elementals, or taking on harder mobs for some quest, then prot is clearly the fastest for me.

If you're under 60 you can respec and still tank with no problems.

If you're over 60 then build 2 sets of gear; a dps set and a tanking set.

Use the dps set for soloing or when in smaller groups. Use the tanking set for tanking in groups.

I have a pretty good dps set and I never respec, I stay prot.

I was lfg to tank and my notes stated that I was prot spec;

player: Want to tank -instance- ?
me: sure
player invites and summons.
player inspects gear and spec.
player: You just switch to prot?
me: No. I have 2 sets of gear and this is my dps set. I switch to my tanking gear when I need to tank.
player: Wow. You have a pretty nice dps set.

My rogue still burns down mobs a lot faster than my prot warrior but with decent dps gear it really makes a difference.

before level 50 (and devastate), yes. it sucks.

afterwards, it gets a lot better. you definitely want to get a dps set with lots of strength.

I leveled from 60-70 as prot. Before that, I was fury with (practically) twinked gear. The biggest difference? I didn't die as much. For me, nothing was more frustrating than those corpse runs when you are in the middle of a quest. Although I did lose the ability to totally burn down weaker mobs, or even groups of mobs with sweeping strikes, being able to take on 3 mobs at once and not get close to death made it worth it.

So to answer your question, prot sucks for solo when you gear is weak, or you are lower level so you don't get the good abilities and talents. Devastate is a must.

I levelled my warrior prot from 10.

once I got shield block and then revenge, it was easy. Like has been mentioned, with prot, you don't have much downtime, and you can take a lot of adds.

Devastate IS useful, especially when dealing with outland mobs, but it's not the only thing that makes prot a viable soloing spec.

Short answer; Hell no, its freaking easy, in fact when I was prot I barely had any down time. Mind you it took a year and 5 months to kill a few mobs, but hey if your not pressed for time its just the right thing (especially if your to cheap to respec).

I leveled up to 70 as DW Fury spec. However, I did have a lot of down time. I could burn mobs down fast - not doubt. But if I ended up with more that 3 adds - I would die fast.

I switched to full prot. spec and geared / gemmed for prot. My gear is fairly good. with almost 14k unbuffed health almost 18k armor and almost 500 defense.

However- i was did not have those stats when I first switched. After switching and gemming, I was able to solo all of the netherstorm 3 and 4 man group quests that envolved lvl 70 elites with a fare amount of ease.

Solo as prot. warrior is a bit slower. However, I have found equiping my DPS gear and dual weilding my gladiators cleaver and quickblade I am able to kill much faster with minimal downtime.

DPS is fast. But Prot. (at least at my level) is better for survivability. Nothing is more satisfying for me to be able to solo a lvl 70 or 71 elite while on lookers watch only to get "wow that was awesome" after I win.

Have a good time with warrior! It is a challenging job, but rewarding one.

I've been soloing as a prot warrior since level 60 now (2 levels) and I find the survivability is extremely high. All I need to do to beat most opponents is Thunder Strike, Demo Shout, then spam Devastate until either Revenge becomes available or I have enough rage to HS or the mob dies. Easiest two level ever. Much easier to hold aggro in instances too.

The only problem I have seen so far is when a level 70 guildie (melee) comes to help me kill an elite: if I go full out and they aren't expecting it, I can steal aggro by mistake.

I think I understand your pain :) . I had protection for a long time and noticed that its difficult for a warr to solo.
I asked around if anyone needed help in completing a quest because I couldnt do a simple quest on my own. Obviously your
gear is not updated (as mine)! Obviously this is your main(like mine!!!).

I think the best way to deal with the situation is to begin a rogue or a pure dps character. Hit 70 and then begin the warrior with the help of the 70 (money-items). The warrior TAKES A LOT OF CASH AND HARD GAMEPLAY=time. Thats why you wont find so many warriors in guilds.

If you are so in to tanking then try a paladin , they too have tanking abilities

If this does worth the trouble ?

Its up to you to deside...
