Disc priests as healersFollow

So I was holy til 62 and decided try out disc spec because of the very attractive abilities. So I re'specd and of course, had a fun *** time. So since then I've still healed for groups and was very successful. However at 64 I healed a group for sethekk halls and did fine til the first boss. We wiped a few times and as healer I took responsibility even though the tank couldn't hold aggro worth a damn and there was no CC whatsoever.

Now I plan on staying disc spec'd for good, but I love healing groups. So far as long as I have a decent group I heal just fine (not to mention I never run out of mana). However will Disc spec with good gear cut it when it comes to healing groups for heriocs or other level 70 instances?

While I was levelling I used a heavy Disc build (i levelled with a static, with my husband as tank). My gear was always up to date and I had no problem healing normal 5 mans. Until I hit my first Heroic. And I really struggled =( I couldn't beleive how big a jump it was from normal to heroic with the sheer damage spikes taken by the tank.

So in my experience Holy is better if you are main healing an heroic unless you have amazing gear to cover the shortfall in +healing talents. Or have a very well geared tank and 3 mages/other CC/off healer

However...it's your game and if you can make it work, then good luck to you. But my feeling is to make it easier on yourself, spec for more healing talents at 70 until you get better gear, and then see what you can do with a Disc spec :)

AFAIK heavy disc is more useful in PVP than PVE, if you are worried about grinding then taking Surge of Light and the +healing/damage talents in holy and picking up some DPS gear is more than good enough. I didn't lose the damage talents until I started SSC/TK :) , and i've never had a problem with questing or grinding solo.

Even as a Disc healer, take those 5 points in Holy in the second tier than make your heals .5 seconds faster.
Heroics are much more HPS races than the HPM - HPS balance that normal instances are.

I'm glad to hear that it isn't entirely impossible. I really love my disc spec and I love healing too.

I've been levelling in a combination of Disc and Holy. Depending on how deep you go Disc I'm convinced you can easily heal up to the first 25-mans.

Here's the spec I've been using;

And here's the spec I'd go if I wanted full disc healing;

Keep in mind that aside from the Pain Supression you lack pretty much all the much-needed PvP talents though (imp mana burn, focused power, focussed will, martyrdom).

At 80 I'm planning to go this;

Which I reckon will work fine for 5-mans, raids and PvP healing.

So not even knowing what talents they're going to add to each tree you've already made up you mind as to your 80 build? Bravo!

This is one of the standard IDS raid healing builds and is something you might like to consider when you get to 70. The reason being that the deeper holy talents will increase your healing throughput substantially which is desirable for when you're healing heroics early on. By all means go the disc route while you're levelling, it provides a nice balance for grinding and healing. Once you start healing some of the harder heroics though, I'm not sure if you'll have the required healing power with your current build.

Looking at your current spec, you could change things around to help your PVE healing, so here's a few things you could think about changing. Points in wand specialization won't be very useful any more, consider putting them in Improved pw:fortitude and silent resolve. Force of will doesn't help healing while power infusion and pain supression would. I'd reccommend switching your holy talents to give you healing focus and 5/5 in divine fury, probably taking the points out of holy specialization and holy nova. Spell warding is very useful for PVP so I can see why you might want that, its not unuseful for PVE, but for PVE healing inspiration and improved healing might be a better way to go.

As for healing heroics, you'll really need good gear as you'll be missing those 20point+ holy talents that increase the size of your heals, but I see no reason why it can't be done. Most probably your tank's gear and ability and group make-up will determine how well you get along PVE healing.

I just hit 70 and am currently PvPing and healing instances to get pre-Kara gear. I'll bookmark this page so I will have some builds to look at when I respec :P

1) Actually I've got a fairly good idea what's going to be added thanks to the leaked alpha talents. Sure, they might change those talents completly but they'd have to come up with something REALLY interesting for me to do a full respec.
2) Does it matter? I'm quite certain I want to retain the spec I have at the moment, and 10 points invested in either tree isn't going to get me to the 51-pointer anyway.
