Prot Aura?Follow

I'm a 34 Prot Pally and spend most my time playing with my spouse (a 34 shadow priest). When we instance, we bring her daughter (sub spec'd rogue) with us and just throw another class or two into the mix to get things done quicker. With the aforementioned in mind, what aura should I be using? I realize that as the one taking 98% of the hits devotion aura makes a lot of sense, but what is the downside of using retribution aura? Note: I only have 2 points in improved devotion aura.

I've tried it both ways and can't tell that I'm taking more or less damage or holding aggro better or worse. Is that maybe the answer? It's so early on in the game that it doesn't make much difference? Furthermore, if that is the case, what should I anticipate as the lvls pass? And if devotion aura isn't of any great use, then I'd like to put those points somewhere else.

Any information on this matter would be kindly appreciated.

Imp. Devotion is a "no-no".

Devotion Aura (Rank 8) gives 861 armor. 5/5 Improved Devotion Aura (with Rank 8) gives 1205 Armor. Having 5/5 talent points in Improved Devotion Aura only gives you 344.4 extra armor (only when using that aura)...At 70, as prot you will have anywhere from 15k armor up. 344.4 armor is not really that big of a portion to be adding to that ~15k or more to be worth 5 whole talent points.

That amount is smaller below rank 8, as you could have guessed :P

Grabbing Redoubt will benefit you more and unlock Shield Spec.

I usually use Retribution Aura as the default one. The little bit of holy damage is..more damage..a bit more threat..
Though, if you are fighting a certain caster, switch to the resist buff of the school of spells the caster is casting.
IF you seem to be taking a lot of damage, and the added damage you do from retribution aura wouldn't help, you could use Devo. aura, but usually retribution or a resist is the way to go :)

At lower levels Devotion Aura is not a bad choice actually. You don't have those insane values of armor and the effect of Devo will be greater. I'm leveling another Paladin alongside my gf's Shaman, level 30 right now, and until getting Sanctity Aura I ran Devo. It was much better for us then running Ret or Con Auras. It really comes down to what you need more. If you are getting hit too hard, you should put up Devo because that extra threat won't mean jack squat if you die :P Generally speaking though Ret Aura will be teh best way to go, unless as pointed out, you need a particular Resist Aura up.

That's one of the challenges as a Paly tank, knowing your limits and what Aura will be best for you in a given situation.
