Before i go on yes i have read the stickys.
I'm not sure what pet i want to take to 70, my guild want a BM specced hunter which i am(lvl55 at mo)but that is all they can tell me, so what kind of pet shall i stick with for when i eventually get to kara, by that i mean DPS or Tank?
i've never taken a hunter as far as that so not sure what will be expected of me, my guild is no hope other than a BM specced.
Any thoughts please.

Before anyone else replies, I want you to consider something:

What job do you think you'll be doing in a raid? You are certainly not going to be healing, so that leaves Utility, Tank or DPS. Tanks got dedicated classes like Druids, Paladins and Warriors. Most classes got some sort of utility or other. Warlocks got Healthstones and Banish. Mages got food/water and Sheep/counterspell. We got a sting or two and our traps. So, what's left?

Think on that for a while, then answer your own question quite accurately. After that, come back with a far more specific question that is worthy of anyone's attention.

Then you will have noticed the sticky says there is no best pet and you should use whatever you feel comfortable using. This remains true. While leveling the differences between pet families is not very significant. That said, I preferred a boar. Oink! Charge with gore is very nice. You'll want to tame everything along the way to learn all the skills that only a pet can teach your hunter.

There have also been a few threads on this recently with regard to end-game. The highest DPS for raids is provided by ravagers via the gore skill until your critical strike rating gets up around 35%. At that point a wind serpent becomes the highest DPS pet for raids. Its doubtful you'll reach that level of crit until you see Zul'aman.

ravagers and cats are about equal, ravagers are very slightly higher, but I still use cats because I like them better. Wind serpents are really only viable at 40%, and even at that point will only pull along side the typical raid pets. Wind Serpents are a lot better for SV hunters then BM hunters.

I really love gorillas with a passion they just go with taurens like strawberrys and cream, but they don't do much damage but they can take some, i've had just about every pet in game and hate them all but gorillas, but if i had to go for pure DPS then i suppose i'd putup with a cat.

There are tricks and traps to every decision you will make as an endgame hunter. There is no 'best spec' for all endgame roles. You will only find a few truths about your role as a hunter since the role will vary depending on the situation.

Truths about Hunter roles:

1. There is no best way to play by yourself, there is a set of 'better ways' to play in given groups. Learn those ways and you will be welcome in any group: PvP, PvE instancing or Raid.
2. Prejudice will factor in no matter what you choose to do. There are many misconceptions about hunters and hunters that desperately try to live up to those misconceptions- thus spreading them. Learn to play a Hunter- it's not easy in end game.
3. Stay on top of changes. Even a small change in one of our abilities can radically alter what we are able to do. For an example of this, look how much attention was given to the fact that we can use sharpening stones on melee weapons and it affects our ranged damage. This could've been a Blizz 'oops' and hunters are out there testing it to death. Little adds or nerfs can really change our abilities and standard rotations.
4. In the past and up to now, Hunters are a ranged DPS class. Our pets are our major melee component and if we are in melee, we are being ineffective and not doing our role: ranged combat. SV hunters are the ones that walk a finer line in this aspect and they are the CC masters. BM hunters do most melee damage of all of specs and it's with their pets. MM hunters should be in melee as little a humanly possible. They are ranged burst damage specialists. It will likely stay this way for a while but pay attention to #3- it applies here.
5. Hunters tend to have the ability to do great and really bad things. Your pet is the #1 reason for this. Learn to control your pet and never be without one if combat is possible. They are your best friend and frequently the source of big embarassment and not because they've done a naughty thing on the carpet! They can wipe a Raid or Instance group so fast it's not funny.
6. Last but not least: your main job is to stay alert. Few other classes have the array of tools at their disposal to generate and remove aggro as much as a hunter. You can pull aggro off a caster, a tank or anyone else with relative ease. This can be a good or bad thing. You can dump aggro so fast that its a frequently used tactic. This can be a good or bad thing. Be mindful of your aggro at all times and load add-ons to help you do your role. Omen, Recount/SWStats, zHunter are pretty much staples of the good hunter. Learn to use them.

Others have reinforced pet choice issues. Learn the pets and choose for your playstyle. Whatever pet you choose, learn to use that pet properly before committing to a group environment. Practice on mobs and soloing. That's what it's for.

Good luck!

ravager - highest dps pet (except for the wind serpent thing, but you said kara level). cats are close, but not equal.

for now, just get some tank-like pet to level with - i love my boar for leveling. when you get to blade edge mtns, train one of those ravagers (they know the max rank of gore) and just level it to 70 with you.

as a BM hunter, you will be expected to do lots of damage and to have the FI talent max'd out to help the rest of your group's damage. when you get steady shot, start to learn about shot rotations and weapon speed and how they affect your dps.

Really? Because I just copied this from Aethien's stickey. First page, Original Post:

Pre-Raid Tips and Tricks wrote:
Pets:
check Petopia for more and detailed information.

In raiding you want top dps from your pet, simply because that is all it can do.
A list of popular raiding pets:
Ravager: Best dps pet because of Gore+bite and high base dps.
cat: virtually the same as ravagers only exchanging gore with claw.
Slightly worse at dps because gore is better then claw.
Windserpent: Used to be top dps but lightning breath has been nerfed.
Though it still does good damage and its the only one that can do damage from a distance.
WS can probably do more dps then ravagers if you have enough crit, however this doesnt come into view until you are T5(+) geared.
WS also currently have a lot of trouble wich forces you to take LB off of autocats and incorporate it into your macro(s).
Scorpid: Used to be top dps, but since Scorpid poison got nerfed, they are back to being weak dps pets used only in arena to keep healers dispelling.
Wolf: Furious howl doesnt require your pet to be in melee range so wolves give you (and your group) a bit of extra damage when its impossible to send in your pet.
Sadly, there isnt a new furious howl in tBC so its not really that good anymore.
Owl/bat: decent dps but their strength lies in screech.
Screech is a powerful debuff when fighting melee mobs, However, in my opinion screech doesnt shine in raids.
carrion birds are the same as owls/bats only with lower dps and more hp.

Dash/Dive is a useful tool for pets, it allows them to get out of melee/AoE fast to help them survive longer.
Thus my advice is to leave it off of autocast as you dont want your pet to reach a boss before the tank anyway and being able to get it back quickly is a big help.

General rules of thumb:
* Your pet is melee, that means that you should place it where the other melee is.
* If melee has to run out of range, so does your pet.
* If your pet is taking damage make sure you have mend pet up a lot.
* Avoidance, Great stamina (and resistances) are important, they keep your pet alive longer.
* Armor isnt as good because your pet wont get a direct hit, and nearly all AoE is magical damage.(gruul is the exception here, getting max armor and stamina there will be great for keeping your pet alive)
* If your pet does get a direct hit, its dead anyway.
* And ofcourse: Cobra reflexes is a must, it is a big improvement to dps.

You're making Aethien sad.
