Okay so I have just started playing a shaman and he is lvl 23 and currently elemental spec. What I want to know is should I go with a one hander with a sheild or a 2 hander? Any help would be welcome thx.

if you are taking a lot of melee damage, pick up a shield. If not, two-hander.

this is subject to change based on the stats of the items.

If you are solo-ing most of the time and need to tank a bit. A shield is good.

If you are in a team and the mobs never get to touch u, use watever that gives u the most buff.
e.g. Staff, versus 1 hand + shield, or 1 hand + offhand item.

So while leveling up, if u picked up a one hand thingy (whether main hand weapon, or off hand item/shield) that looks good but not as good as a two hand on its own, dont throw it away. You might find something to pair it up with that make them better as a whole later one :)

This.

Ultimately, you should expect to aim for a 1H + shield combo since it will serve you well in any and all situations, but you can afford to trade some of your armor for better spell damage stats in parties where you won't (or at least shouldn't) typically be taking any damage.

a staff will tend to have mroe extra lil stats like crit and hit on it. where as a one hander and shield/Off hand will have a fair bit more spell dmg and ofc if a shield armor.

and unless its a realy cool looking staff i would go with one hander and shield cos shields look cool =D

I have a 70 elemental sham that I use 1h and shield with the majority of the time for BG's, Instances and a little of my every day questing. I also keep a 2h weapon in my bags and change back and forth as the situation arises. I'm not sure when you get it but windfury with the 2h can be an awesome while leveling and in some early on instances.

The reason I prefer the 1h/sheild combination is that without true armor buffs I always felt that I take too much damage too fast and the sheild gives you time to heal yourself/drop totems/change weapon buffs.

I also like the speed advantage of a 1h to interrupt spells or to help slow down the warriors and rogues that like to seek us out whenever they can. I buff my 1h with frost weapon on the hope of the 8 second slowdown before most BG's as I need to keep them off me more than I need to increase my DPS from my melee weapon. I combine this walking backwards, dropping earthbind totem and alternating frost shock (slows them) with my fire nova (hurts them) until either they die or I die.

I guess my rule while leveling would be to keep both and use the 2h when you are in a group questing or instancing to maximize your dps or when you are lucky enough to be questing a few levels under you when you can pull one at a time.
