A little help for a n00bFollow

#1 Jun 11 2008 at 7:31 AM Rating: Decent
Hello

I just recently started playing WoW and i have decided to lvl a druid..... going feral to 40 then thinkin about going over to boomkin

Is this a good idea? does boomkin lvl well? or should i just stay feral til higher lvl??

My second question is about where i should lvl/quest? what areas have the best druid quest rewards? i am 25 right now, and am starting to fool around in Duskwoods but so far the quests have mostly been crappy cloth or mail gear. Should i stick there or move to somehwere else?

Anyways, thanks for the help

PS- lots of great help in this forum, thanks a lot ^^

You're not going to start seeing good quest rewards, apart from quests involving instances, until you hit the Outland (at or about level 58). The best equipment you'll find while leveling is through running instances, otherwise just buy upgrades from the AH every 7-10 levels. So the answer to where to level is really wherever you find most fun.

My other piece of advice is not to be afraid to fly around the world. For example, you say you're in Duskwood now. You can move between Duskwood, Ashenvale, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, and so forth. That way you can always be questing (now a more efficient way to level than grinding) and always have green/yellow quests to do, so you can keep leveling efficiently. Plus, as a new player, you may just find it fun to see the content. There is a handy zones by level chart here that can help you find new areas to explore.

Been a while since I leveled Alliance but you should be swimming in feral quest rewards below lvl 40, since you're basically looking for rogue/hunter leather. It's the most common item at that lvl. If Duskwood doesnt have any, try Ashenvale (more druid-centric area, though I think Duskwood is one of the best zones in the game). Don't sweat it. Ferals aren't incredibly gear-dependent. It's not like a warrior; don't feel the need to upgrade every few lvls. Plus, remember what you want out of your weapon is pure stats. DPS and procs don't count since you attack with your claws.

If/when you go Boomkin you'll find there's almost no good caster leather til Outland. So either be prepared to wear cloth, spend hours looking for that one good bracer set or wait until you're 58. I haven't dipped my toe in crit-chicken land but the general consensus seems to be it's doable lower but far easier post-58.

Edit: Missed that this is your first (or one of your first) toon. I second what Teacake says. Explore, have fun, don't sweat the gear. It'll come.

I went feral up until about 60, mostly cat mode, and respecced to moonkin and let me tell you...wow what a difference. It's a whole lot easier to level and a whole lot easier to kill mobs as well. You can at most times cast entangle roots, cast insect Swarm and moonfire two times, sit back, relax and wait for the kill. Easy. But when you fight indoors and can't cast roots feral will have the advantage.

But i was in outlands when i went moonkin, it was really easy to regear from feral to int/spr with just quest rewards...so i'm not to sure about the gear at lower levels..i'm am currently wearing some cloth items right now though...i get bashed for it too. Gear is not too important at lower levels...Stats are. I think I was still using some level 30 gear when i was 50...i was using smites hammer until probably 40ish just because it wasnt really worth upgrading it considering the stats of other weapons weren't any better until 40ish. I didn't bg much though of course.

But whatever...not too worried about gear until i hit 70 and begin to raid and pvp seriously anyways.

If Boomkin is what you want to try, I suggest you make the switch as soon as possible, although, waiting until the Moonkin form is available to you is a very good idea.

It will be a completely different playstyle than what you're used to on your Druid now. Instead of running head first into stuff and walk out with blood-soaked fur, you'll be standing far away, using entangling roots and the searing light of the stars and Elune herself to harm your targets. Blood and feathers just don't mix well, if you know what I mean.

When I respecced my Druid to Restokin (Boomkin with focus on healing), I more than often only used a couple of spells to harm the target and then ran up to it with my mace and beat the crap out of it. Very mana efficient if it wasn't for the massive healing I needed all the time.

I guess I've been Feral for too long.

Just a heads up, though. You won't see much leather armor with caster stats until you reach Outland. Most of the non-cloth gear at lower levels was designed with melee combat in mind. Shamans have the same problem with caster mail gear being scarce until level 50+. Not to mention plate armor with healing stats. Ugh.

I'm a 70 boomkin and currently in the process of replacing all my gear with 70 leather rare/epics and I've been finding it pretty hard to do. Gearing a boomkin is kind of limited about the only thing I've really seen is the pvp sets and the tiered gear. Of course there is some stuff in the middle that you can use, but like I said before it's little limited.

I mean, the first real Kara run I did my guild let me have 3 epics all healing pieces, two of which were cloth.

But going moonkin is going to be a sacrifice but in the end I think it's worth it, when I'm not lagging very badly I can top out dps against a mage and a hellfire loving warlock in 5 mans. As I've stated in previous threads, you have to learn to love moonkin. Moonkin is like a fine glass of scotch, at first it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but after awhile you crave the way it makes you feel.

Since most of you have your 70 druids, do you prefer leveling Outland as Moonkin or Feral?

I leveled as Balance 1-70 and enjoyed every moment. The playstyle is different to Feral. I've played a friends feral druid and didn't like it much at all, so like Mazra suggested, I'd swap to Balance now and see if you like the playstyle. If you find it's not quite it but still want tot ry later, wait til you get Moonkin form. suddenly you're casting spells while wearing plate armour. Very handy.

Outland leveling as Balance is also fine. Solo'd a few elite quests myself thanks to roots and plate-like armour.

Ah the only problem I see going balance is going oom. With feral, you never have to stop and pot. I got a few pieces of balance gear as I started to quest in Outland to see what it's like but I was just curious about going oom and if it's slower than feral leveling... Anyway, i'll stop straying from the topic.

There is a definate possibility of going oom. But thats just sort of something you learn to live with. If you have high enough spirit and you know how to rotate your spells for the best possible use of your mana you can easily go 6 minutes on your mana bar and then innervate.

My suggestion to keep yourself from going oom is to use root/starfire. Starfire is your most mana friendly spell you have when it comes down to the mana/damage ratio. It may not be very fun knowing that you can just wrath things down and it'll be a little faster but that will make you go oom. With my gear and buffed for kara I have around 460 mp5 not casting and I can just plow through the trash wrathing everything, but when it comes to the bosses I switch to using starfire and I hardly drop below 50% of my mana and all the bosses starting with attumen are 130k and up for health.

Besides, you can just make a 70 mage friend to make tables for you. When I have manna biscuits I generally don't care about going oom and I kick out highest possible dps when im doing dailies or farming, that dps ranges from 750ish-1200ish depending what spells crit.
