Sorry for this naive question, but is there any difference between a piece of gear with, say, up to +17 dmg and +17 fire dmg (assuming I'm a fire mage of course). And why is it that when I look at my spell stats, I see the total +dmg number but the +fire dmg is not listed anywhere (at least anywhere that I've noticed)? Thanks.

Well when you're casting fire spells, there is no difference between vanilla +dmg and +fire dmg. However, when casting any frost or arcane spell, you'll only benefit from the vanilla dmg(and of course any other school specific modifiers you have).

As for the tooltip, if you hover your mouse over the spell damage on your character sheet, it will pop up and show you school by school what your bonuses are.

For fire spells they are exactly the same. You will notice however if an item has a school specific +spell dmg, it is generally more then if the same type of item had a generic (all schools) +spell dmg. To view your +fire dmg (or any other school) you have to curse over your spell damage stat in the spell window of your character window. The displayed spell dmg (without a mouseover) only shows you non specific +spell dmg.

Thanks for the responses. Comparing two wands I have, one gives me +164 fire/+102 other dmg, and the other +174 fire/+95 other dmg. Since the spell stats window seems to give the lowest value of the various schools (or so it seems), the tooltip "tip" is useful for getting the max value of the schools.
