question does using a lower rank spell mean it will be resisted more. I.e. Will a rank 1 frost nova be resisted more than a rank 5 one? I know + spelldmg is nerfed on lower lvl ones but what about resist lvls

Nope, that is why rank one frost nova, sheep(pvp only), and frost shield (PvP) are preferred.

Rank 1 frostbolt is also very nice for kiting, and slowing people in pvp.

Why Rank 1 Frost Shield?

Higher ranks give more armor and some Frost resist, and you don't have to cast it over and over in PvP, do you?

If you use it as an all the time PvP buff(I do, for instance), then you want to use a high rank. If you're using Molten armor for more damage and only switching when you see someone coming for you, I can see using rank 1, though I'd still use the higher rank.

Its when you have a priest or shaman spam purging/dispelling you in arena for example, you can't constantly be throwing back up max rank frost armor, so you use rank 1. Start the fights with max ranks, but once your buffs are stripped start using rank 1s just for buff fodder and the slowing effect of frost (ice?) armor. I always get the 2 confused.

In BG and more so Arena, you use frost shield primary for the snare and frostbite procs. So when you are repeated mass dispelled, purged, and spellstolen, the rank 1 version is much better because of mana conservation. Try dueling and reapply max-rank frost shield or molten armor 3-5 times during the fight. You will notice the impact.

I've used rank 1 nova since level 12 :P

A friend of mine played a mage and told me about it. Never used max rank before.

Rank 1 polymorph lasts 20 seconds in normal play, and like all CC in PVP the cap is 10 seconds. So theres really no point to max rank poly (or fear) in PVP, it just costs more mana.

In total I use-

Rank 1 nova- always
Rank 1 poly- always
Rank 1 blizzard- try to find rogues from range
Rank 1 frostbolt- for snares
Rank 1 AE- find rogues up close
Rank 1 buffs- reapply when I get purged for buff padding and the snaring effect of ice/frost armor. I often throw up ice barrier then rank 1 mana shield when a felhunters on me, and I try to watch what gets devoured and rebuff it with a rank 1 where possible.

I should use rank 1 cone of cold but I'm running out of keybindings =O

Last night in Hyjal I happened to be frost, I normally respec to raid but I was 61 frost and saving my gold for a BIG purchase (which I got, yay, darkmoon card: crusade =D). Anyway I forgot to "switch" the spots of my max rank and rank 1 blizzards.....so on the first 3 trash waves I was using rank 1 blizzard, wondering why I was doing 500dps while the rest were doing 4k....

My guild lol'd when I told them.

In PVE, I have to switch my poly macros around (use max rank) and of course I have to remember to use max rank AOE ;)
