There is NO WAY he could get into ZA with only ~400 Spell Dmg. Kara PuG's usually have a min. requirement of 700-800. So at least 800 for ZA. My mage is currently in slightly over half of a PvP set while raiding, yet I still am around the top 5 DPS when doing Gruuls/Mags.

In my awesome PvP/PvE gear raiding set I have ~700 dmg, ~33% crit, 9.5k mana, (resil doesnt matter for raiding), and 9.5k HP. Those stats are significantly better then your friend there and I still have a hard time conserving mana while still putting out decent damage without a Shad. Priest.

And about the bear mount. If he got into a complete PuG then he MIGHT get the mount, but if it was mainly a guild ZA then most likely one of the guildies would get it.

If he wants the mount really bad then I think he'd need to do kara a while till he has at LEAST 700 damage, then he might get into a ZA group. Sorry to say nowhere near 405 is gonna cut it. If that was a typo and you meant 705 then that might be ok.

Edit: 33% crit not 23 (for me)

You want to be at 900+ spell damage for ZA. It is essentially T5 content. He might want to level tailoring for spellfire/spellstrike sets, do instances and or heroics, and do some pvp for gear to fill in the gaps. Yes, the mount is cool, but it's a timed fight for the mount and +400 damage will be a hindrance to the run.

You told him he is nuts and you are correct.

I am not saying he is going there or trying to now, just saying what he has now and his plan.

Can he gear for ZA through PvP gear alone? I guess that is my question now.

If the question is whether he can equip to be effective in ZA through PVP alone, it largely depends on the PVP that is going to be played and how well he plays it. Personally, I do not think full S1 would cut it, if I was putting together a group. However, the vengeful gladiator's set would probably be sufficient, gear-wise.

You do not state whether your friend has a main that he has done 5-mans/raids/heroics with and this could have a negative impact on any raid run. While playing a mage in groups is not rocket science, it is very important to understand the role and how to interact with the other team members. If he has not previously done some substantial late game teaming, either as a mage or other class, I would strongly recommend that he do a bunch of standard and/or heroic 5-mans so that he is an asset in ZA.

If he does not already have a bunch of PVP points/tokens to turn in, I would think that running heroics for badge-wear could result in better equipment faster than PVP. I certainly have not done much PVPing, but in the BF playing time it has taken me to put together 11K points, I could have easily put together 30 - 50 BoJ.

No way in hell.

Raid buffed I'm at 1105 for Frost (without Kings at that), and I'm still nervous about going into ZA.

The big thing missing on PvP gear overall for raids is hit rating. Not to mention that the average piece of PvE gear will outdamage the average piece of PvP gear(weapons are a bit of an exception).

Kawainui, I'd be willing to bet gold that your friend will never have a ZA Bear mount if he goes that route. Ever.

So now, I must ask you o wise mage folk. --- I have read the "Greatest Mage Post Ever" ---- What are the requirements for Kara? I understand spec variations but what are good minimums for common specs?

I can't remember the numbers exactly, so I'm just pulling these out of my ***, so I may be a little off.

550 dmg(before Mind Mastery)
80 hit
20% crit(a wee bit lower ok for frost, a bit higher for fire)

Also generally speaking, if he still has alot of honor and is looking to buy for pve he should get vidicator's before gladiator, weapon being a possible exeption.(though i'm sick of seeing that ugly staff everywhere)
