Different Kinds of DruidsFollow

#1 Jun 09 2008 at 12:21 PM Rating: Decent
So... I decided I wanted to level a druid and now I'm at level 53. I started reading a few threads on the druid section of the forum but I'm confused as to what a "Dream state" druid, or a "Boomkin" or a "Restokin" and all these names for druids are. I know they're (probably) different builds but can someone explain to me the difference between each or link me to an older thread I may have missed where there were explanations? Thanks :)

I'm feral but lurk enough to have learned that Boomkin (along with Doomkin) is a name for a full balance druid, or at least one with Moonkin form. Used to be mocked as "oomkin" because mana was always problematic.

Dreamstate and Restokin are two names for a hybrid build where you fill the Balance tree up to Dreamstate and the resto tree up to Nature's Swiftness. And as long as you're just one point away from Moonkin over in balance you grab that to increase your solo potential and survivability in BGs, and because that one point gets you a neato form which is more than one more point in resto would get you.

I've seen some people call them out as different specs and they very well may be, but usually when somebody says that somebody else says "bah, they're the same build!" I guess if you bypassed putting that last in point into moonkin you couldn't be restokin so you'd fall back on calling yourself dreamstate. Maybe that's the diff.

i think the difference between dreamstate and restokin is that dreamstate focuses more on balance damage while restokin is more heal focused. for instance, a dreamstate build would pick up vengeance and moonfury while a restokin wouldnt worry about those and instead grab full moonglow, balance of power and natures grasp.

Balance 4 Lyfe.

Btw, what spec are you currently now using?

I'm feral for leveling. It's not bad but I plan to go Resto for 2v2 arena healing with my friend who's a level 64 warrior at the moment. I know I'm still quite a few miles from hitting 70 as I haven't even hit Outland yet, but I just wanted to get a better idea of the different builds and I got pretty confused.

Heh, I figured you were feral. I never have tried feral in all my time as a druid. I suppose I haven't really strayed to far from balance, except the whole slew of instances I healed before I made it to outland.

As far as I know, Dreamstate and Restokin is the exact same thing. They are both healing builds that rely heavily on many balance talents to make the spell Healing Touch more efficient, and especially on the talent Dreamstate to offer a major boost in mana regeneration. That's the build I use, and I love it. You are still extremely efficient (it take a lot for me to go out of mana) while keeping the ability to solo effectively.

It is suited best for 5-mans where you'll most likely have to spam Healing Touch anyway, since often rolling lifeblooms on a tank just won't cut it. It's good for arena too, but I know nothing about PvP.

As I said in another thread, the way I understand it:

[...] a restokin build, which is a damage/healing PvP hybrid that takes moonkin form for extra durability and high mana regen to outlast opponents, as well as on-the-fly burst DPS to pressure opponents, and a dreamstate build which is a high mana regen PvE healing build

For example, 40/0/21 restokin vs 33/0/28 Dreamstate build

A moonkin/doomkin/oomkin/boomkin build is just a PvE Balance dps build that doesn't involve healing (e.g. something like this).

Just to throw my two cents back into the pile of pennies, this is exactly what Quor said above and makes total sense.

I'd probably go with this 40/0/21 build instead. There's absolutely no need to put more than one point into Improved Nature's Grasp, especially when compared to the extra point in Wrath of Cenarius and maxing out Focused Starlight.

At least in my opinion.

One point in Improved Nature's Grasp will give Nature's Grasp a 50% chance to root on hit. Since most melee opponents, due to latency, would get off at least two attacks before you move out of range, the one point would be enough.

My own Restokin build, however, looks more like 35/0/26.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. When I hit 70, I'm planning to be PvPing as a healer (mainly in arena). I don't know how many of you here actually PvP with your druids but for those of you that do (or know someone who does), could link your build so I could check them out? Thanks
