Please let me know if my Talents bite? :)Follow

As I posted a bit ago, I am working on a Paladin duo with my fiancee. She is going Holy and I'm going Protection. However, this is my first Paladin...ever. So I'm sure my talents leave something to be desired, more than likely an understatement I bet. I do not want to be a cookie-cutter, I have not looked at ANY other talent builds as of yet. I do not want to be one of the people who get on here and go "make my talent tree for me." I simply would like to know if I have missed any must-have talents for a tank, or if I took any never-have talents by accident. I wouldn't mind some advice of course, on any of it, but I would really love to avoid being the cookie cutter. Unless, you know...I made it by accident :3 in which case I will not consider it cookie cutter cause I came up with it on my own >.>

Thanks in advance ^_^

Not too bad of a build :)..(but kinda close to the "cookie-cutter") :P

Only thing I would change is to drop 2/2 Guardian's Favor and pick up 2/2 Imp. Judgements.
Judgement is a nice burst of aggro, and easily pulls a mob back onto you if you see one start to run off. More judgements = more aggro :).
(There is an issue of Imp. Judgement getting wasted, on a normal rotation of consecration, holy shield, and judgement/seal..while tanking the same mob for a while..where in order to keep holy shield up..you have to wait a few seconds to judge, otherwise global cooldown from judging leaves you without holy shield for a brief bit, and the points to improve it by 2 seconds are "wasted") But, for every other time when you are tanking more than one mob, pulling mobs one after another, or need extra burst aggro on something, the judgement being ready and not on cooldown can save ya :P

I do use blessing of protection and blessing of freedom once in a while, but I barely ever say to myself "darn, I wish that wasn't on cooldown"..the way, even WITH Imp. Judgement, I say "WTB judge" and have to throw an avenger's shield or hammer of justice on the mob, to get aggro back, or give me time to judge :P

P.S. Reckoning is great, but once you up your avoidance to a nice level, it stops proc'ing as much, and becomes less and less useful (with more avoidance). If you really like the talent you can keep it untill the end...but when you dodge and parry and avoid say ~50% of the damage that is thrown at you, reckoning only is able to proc on the rest ~50% of the damage that you do take, 10% of the time. (Which is a lot less useful than when you take ~70% of the damage, due to low complete avoidance aka. dodge, parry, (and being missed, which is upped by defense))

Thanks for the advice. I think I've managed to do some modifications which make me rather happy. Nice to hear though that Reckoning, while nice, doesn't always stay useful. I was sorta thinking about skipping that one in the long run anyway since there were other talents I kinda wanted more, but it seemed useful.

This way I was able to get a couple of points into Precision (accuracy is my friend since hits refresh my debuffs) and also into improved devotion aura (since I duo with my fiancee's Paladin it would be nice to be able to leave this up and running a lot while she leaves up another aura). Not 100% sure if it's worth it though. The extra 40% armor bonus might be nice, but I have no idea what that amounts to by the end. 300ish armor I believe? Maybe I could use those 5 points in a better way? Divine Strength maybe to get more damage absorbtion for my shield? Those last 5 points sorta seem to float around a little for me. Maybe even into Intellect so that I have a larger mana pool? I dunno really. Pursuit of Justice seems kinda nice also, but I'm not sure how useful it really is outside of PvP.

Hmm, ok well Imp. Devotion Aura is usually a no-no...Here's why.

Devotion Aura (Rank 8) gives 861 armor. 5/5 Improved Devotion Aura (with Rank 8) gives 1205 Armor. Having 5/5 talent points in Improved Devotion Aura only gives you 344.4 extra armor (only when using that aura) ...At 70, as prot you will have anywhere from 15k armor up. 344.4 armor is not really that big of a portion to be adding to that ~15k or more to be worth 5 whole talent points.

I'd switch out 5/5 Imp. Devo. Aura and add that to 5/5 One-handed Weap, Spec [Increases all damage you deal when a one-hand weapon is equipped] (....5% damage might seem like "just a little bit", but as prot you will have a one hand weapon equipped 100% of the time, and 5% of every single amount of damage you do adds up :)

Spells are a pally tank's worst enemy :P....2/2 Spell warding can help with that, and also 3/3 Pursuit of Justice can help with that. Some choose to just not take either talents..as spells are our worst enemy with or without those two talents. I choose those two talents, to sort of help with the spell damage, as my guild used to not have a tank geared enough to switch out on spell damage heavy fights, so I'd tank everything. I also have got used to the 15% passive speed, and would hate life moving slow :P.

Edit: Wierd links showing up :P

My talent build is http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZV0tIx0dMgqtVbx0h ...

I'd almost recommend dropping spell warding, and maybe pursuit of justice, if it wasn't for the passive speed that I love, And possible pick up 3/3 Precision, or maybe grab reckoning. I do a lot of aoe tanking and avoiding 50% of the damage of a mob does make reckoning proc less, but when your tanking 10 mobs..your taking "half" of everything that 10 mobs throw at you, and reckoning procs a lot more often :P....But I just can't get it out of my mind that as a tank, the less damage I take (at least from spells, the pally's worst enemy), the better.

As for going into holy to get maybe Divine Strength or Divine Intellect. Don't get the strength, 5 points to improve block a bit is not worth it. The Divine Intellect is a possible option, but you dont really stack int as a prot paladin, and 10% of your already low int amount does help a bit, but in my mind its not worth a whole 5 points..and isn't that much. Unless you overgear an instance/raid you shouldn't be "mana-starved" and the heals being thrown on you should be fine to keep your mana up, and if you run low, thats what mana potions are for :P
