Ok I took a tour through the wiki relating to spell damage.

It kinda hurt, because while I understood how the bonus damage was spread out across the spell depending on the cast time... I really can't figure out what happens with the bonus damage in the first place.

So my question is:

Does adding +5 to healing and damage mean my shadow bolt will do 5 more damage straight up?

Also does + 5 to healing and damage mean my corruption does 5 more a tick, or just 5 more total?

I hope this hasn't been covered to death, if it has been please link me where the discussion is and let this thread die.

the coefficent of Shadow Bolt is 85.71%, 105.71 with Shadow and Flame

so w/o SnF, 5 x .8571 = 4.2855 damage added to SB for 5 +Spell Damage.

the coefficent of Corr is 93%, 129% w/Empowered Corruption.

So withour Emp, Corr 5 x 0.93 = 4.65 damage added over the course of the spell.

Corruption gets 93% of spell damage/shadow damage (129% with talents) over the whole spell.

Shadow bolt gets 85.71% of spell damage/shadow damage.

So, +5 damage will give your corruption 4.65 more damage total (6.45 with talents) and 4.2855 damage to your shadowbolt.

This information is from wowwiki.com/spell_damage and is probably accurate.

Pretty much, yes.

It's 5 extra damage over the total duration of the DOT. Each tic only does a percentage of the extra damage.

It's a bit more complicated than that though. Most spells don't have a 1-1 correlation between +damage and actual bonus damage. Spells get more or less bonus damage depending on the cast time, rank, etc. That keeps people from spamming low rank spells to save cast times and mana, as well as balancing longer cast spells.

Edit: spelling

Thanks a ton!

Ok that being said... do you guys prefer + Spell Damage or + Shadow Damage? (For affliction)

I am sorry if I am being annoying, I just wanna get this stuff right. I hate the newbling stage of the MMO process.

ignore lady karlina's comment, she's wrong. the rest are right. +dmg is affected by a multiplier before being added to a spells total damage. with dots it's added to the total damage delt by the dot, so if it was 1000 damage over 18s and is now 1200 over 18 seconds etc...

I really depends on the gear with +Shadow. Normally, gear that has +Shadow will have more damage, however, if you have to sacrifice a lot of Spell Crit and/or Spell Hit for that damage it may not be worth it.

For Instance, look at the Frozen Shadowweave Robe. +72 Shadow Damage and a couple sockets. Excellent peice, lots of +Shadow.

Now look at the Tormented Demonsoul Robes. +62 Spell Damage, but also +50 Spell Crit.

The 62 Damage is obviously preferable because of the Crit.

Jenova, just out of curiosity, what am I wrong about? I know I over simplified but did I really give out bad information?

(I'm not trying to start an argument or anything. I'd just like to know if I missed something so I don't do it again.)

you did say a bit about that you don't get exactly the amount of damage bonus as you do +dmg, but your wording translated ment this:

1000+dmg = between 990 and 1010 bonus to your damage.. which is a very poor example and highly untrue. basically it's mainly about your word, in reality most spells either get like 130% bonus, 35% or 80% regions, which are far from a "pretty much, yes" to
