Currently I am using the Deep Arcane (40) and Fire as proposed in this Mage forum at the top. My current DPS is hoving around 480. I'm not complaining about this spec, but wondering if I should tweak it a bit more. Over the past couple of weeks, I've been looking over various threads, trying different specs, all in an effort to get the most out of what I'm doing. I realize that I'm jumping the gun a bit early because of not being 70 and not having the greatest of gear, but I'm trying to get a better understanding of the specs and what I can do to maximize while leveling up. I did a 2/47/6 spec just before this 40/17/0 that I have now. I've seen my +dmg go up...currently at 572, but the numbers seem to be about equal. I can typically 2-4 shot kill most mobs. I used Frost up til level 64 and enjoyed it and then switched to Fire for the "OMG" fireballs.
So I am coming to my mage brethren here for tweaking advice. "Help me Obewon...you're my only hope" Ok, a bit cheesy perhaps, but you get the point.
After thought: I forgot to add my typically casting order is FB, FB, Fire Blast - dead. If I can I lead with Trinket, PoM, Pyro + Fireball + Fireblast if necessary.

For where you are right now, I wouldn't worry too much about it; 480 DPS at level 66 is excellent, I'm assuming you want to remain at 40 Arcane for the 'OMG FIREBALLS'.
The only thing I would really do is, given your spell rotation, is drop Arcane Impact and put two points in the Magic Attunement and the other in Arcane Fortitude, this could help negate some damage that you take (if you do).
Of Course, another option you have open to you right now is to respec Frost; You just got Ice Lance, and that little spell does some excellent damage against a Frozen target.
Really, you have nothing to worry about at your current level.

Do you plan on going a 40/21/0 spec at 70? And do you plan on doing pvp? If so I would recommend get the magic attunement and taking 2 out of arcane impact to do that. At 70 after you have done a few raids or pvp battles for badges you should be able to crit for a good deal with the 40/21/0.And also I would recommend increasing your reputation with the Scryer's. But if you think that your spec is the problem you might go with a 2/48/11 spec which is giving me a good damage output but I just switched to it so I have yet to test it fully nor have I done a raid with it yet but I will in 2 hours.

Honestly not sure what spec I'm going to take at 70. I'm really not a raider, so most of my time will be spent doing PvP/Farming/Instancing. I've read that the 2/48/11 spec is the highest DPS raid spec for a mage, but requires a certain level of gear (+dmg) in order to fully maximize the effects. Like I said in my original post, I was 2/47/6 until a level or 2 ago. It was here that I read that I was basically gimping myself with that spec due to having subpar +dmg and gear.
I'm curious about frost again, now that I have ice lance. Perhaps I'll let go of my OMG Fireballs spec and try the frost again. I'm assuming that I'll still be able to maintain a decent enough DPS for instancing?

If you want to try out frost then go for it. You shouldn't have any problem running things. I lvled as frost till 69ish then went fire because I was going to raid and wanted to get a feel for it. Here's what id do for frost at lvl 66.

Finish up arcane concentration then 2 more points... wherever. At 70 you can hit up a 17/0/44 spec and change up winters chill, empowered FB, and winds depending on if you want more O or D (more grinding or pvp).

Hmm you want to do PvP/farming/instancing. You might need to go full frost for improved blizzard and cone of cold and ice floes http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oi0cZZVAGcofboVqt do something like this and put the extra where ever you want. The 0/0/54 as of then would be what I would most likely do according to the criteria you gave the 10/0/47 would work as well.
