Holy priest in BG...Follow

#1 Jun 05 2008 at 1:50 PM Rating: Good
I'm a level 56 holy priest, and I like to PVP. I love healing people, it's why I chose this in the first place (I like to fight, too, which is why I have my rogue). I love raids and instances, it's incredible having such a supportive role.

However, I don't know what to say to people when they are rude to me when we are playing (usually AB, for some reason...never been yelled at in AV, only once in WSG). It doesn't happen often, but when it does....It's odd, because I could be healing the crap out of my party and someone will yell at me for not healing them. *blink* Like, calling me names type of yelling.

But, really? You aren't in my party and you stand behind me, don't say anything until you are red? I don't have the benefit of seeing your bars, sorry....?

I don't know. I'm pretty discouraged by the last guy who was super rude (it's not like I am bad at it, I consistently get in the top three for healing done, A LOT of the time I'm at the top), and I keep thinking about what I could have said to him. I actually deserted, and I have never done that, just to get away from him.

Any ideas for when this happens?

First, Fu@K that guy. He was lucky you where even there healing at all. Ive been in loads of BG's being the only healer, and you just cant heal them all no matter how good you are.

Now heres something that may make your life a lot easier in BG's as it sounds like your having a hard time managing healing the people that are in your proximity.

Grab the addon called Healbot. This is a fantastic tool for any BG healer. It lists everyone in the BG and then the people that are within healing range get highlighted. You can bind your heals to certain mouse clicks and then just scroll over the name that is taking damage and click, thus healing whomever needs it that is within range.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Vomica. Do not stress about it. I would have just done an ignore on the guy myself. I hate the deserter debuff. :(

I stress out hard trying to heal folks as a holy priest when in BGs. I use Xperl now and that helps, though healbot sounds like a perfect fit. I'll try that tonight.

If you are not CoH YoruHoshi, definitely strive for it. That way you are healing everyone around you in times of trouble.

Anyway, good luck and happy healing!

Fully agree, you need to be able to see everyone in the BG's health bars, it will help, a lot.

No excuse for being abusive to other players like that guy was, best to put on ignore.

Be sure you can see all the groups in a raid group, not just your own.

Other than that, the guy was a jerk. If he was not in your raid group, or you just had a regular 5 man group, then he had nothing to complain about. If he was in your raid group, then you need to adjust your ui to see all the groups in a raid.

There's no excuse for that guy being rude in a battleground. However, the days when being a healer in a BG meant you were a golden god who could do no wrong are mostly over, thanks to the demand for them in Arena. PVP healers are now popular and plentiful. Once upon a time I hoped to see one other healer on our side in WSG, expected one or two in Arathi Basin, and could count on being the only healer on defense in AV. These days there seem to be about 1.5 healers per party of five in every BG.

That means you can't just be a good healer--you have to be better than the opposing healers. Playing PVP heals calls for more environmental awareness than PVE bar-watching. You have be able to anticipate the movements of other players, to see who is moving out of your line of sight, to see who is getting focused or crowd controlled, to plan for your own survival. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about avoiding aggro. On the downside, that's because the smart players will come after you no matter what.

As you get more used to looking at the battlefield rather than your bars, you'll find that the best healing is done preemptively. You have to get your HoTs and Shields on people before they start taking damage if possible, and you have to start casting your direct heals before they're in trouble. You'll get better at watching the action on the screen, following the dynamics of a fight, and anticipating who will need your healing the most. I suggest getting one of the mods that shows people's health bars over their heads or as parentheses around them--that makes it easier to see who's hurting without taking your eyes off player movement.

I'm also legally required to tell you that the most important step to take for good PVP is to give up keyboard turning and set up some good keybinds.

You must be a rogue regular.

Heh. I did play a PVP Rogue for many months before Burning Crusade. Got triple exalted on him before the Conqueror title existed.

But I gave him up, partially because my PVP priest was more fun, and partially because I had learned the class as a clicker. The shorter universal cooldown on Rogues means you just can't be a clicker and be a top competitor.

I'm better on my priest. I've got timing-critical spells like Mass Dispel, trinket, WotF and Psychic Scream keybound, and I navigate with a mixture of mouse turning and keyboard strafing. Still, I know I'd do better if I wasn't clicking on spells like Shield, Prayer of Mending, Flash Heal and Mana Burn.

I just started a Druid, and I'm doing him right. I'm keybinding everything but the OOC buffs and crafting abilities and the like.

You know, the best way to shine in a BG is to have HealBot up and running. You see everyone's health, you can tell who is nearby, and you can tell who is being targeted (yourself included). I used to hate PVP because I did not start using HealBot until level60 but now I get complimented very often for my healing in BG's. Give it a shot. I know many people see HealBot as cheating, but I did my time without it. Learn your class.. then learn to make things easier.

I use BGs to improve my healing skills, I've never used Healbot however I highly recommend Grid which is just great, you can tailor it to show you health/mana of other players, who's got agro, incoming heals from others, HoTs, who's got PW:S etc etc...and its really lightweight.

Like it has been pointed out, being the healer = being the underdog. You will rarely get recognition for your 'work' and people are likely to shout at you. The world is unfair, but don't let it get to you, f*ck them. As long as you're enjoying yourself.

Just one major tip;

Control+V.

Needs no explanation, enter a BG, use that key combination and love it.
