Prot PvP vs. CasterFollow

What is the most efficient way that a Prot spec can kill a squishy caster in PvP? Just curious. I'm not going to re-spec just for PvP, so don't bother with that advice.

I barely do any PvP with my Prot warrior. However, I was just curious as to the best way I could "try" take out a caster (not including Frost Mages - I just run from them :)).

I always figured it would be to Heroic Strike them to death in between Concussion Blows, Shield Bashes, and Spell Reflects. Is that it?

Would adding Rend, Devastate, or anything like that help? I can't see their benefit, but maybe one can enlighten me.

Thanks.

Honestly? silence with your shield bash chained with well timed intercept stuns + concusion blow stuns, warrior vs mage is alot like rock paper scissors, charge -> frost nova, trinket out of it and silence him with your shield bash, shield slam off the frost shield keep a hamstring or a shield bash daze on him as much as you can if he blinks intercept, if you have intercepted and then he frost novas you, either be ready to spell reflect or stun with concusion blow, fear if absolutely neccesary if he doesnt trinket or ice block out of it exit combat and step back for another charge rince repeat the actions and silence the mage/ stun and reflect as much as possible prot can win if played right more then anything It'll just take practice.

And Ice block? And elemental, frostbolt slow....

To be honest if you meet decent frost mage warlock or shadow priest you are simply dead.

The easiest way to kill those being protection is to respec....

So if you are protection in bgs - go for flag or annoy everyone around.
You have a good chance to kill rogue - even good one unless he decides to run.
Other melee is a fair fight as well, but against a warlock with some PvP skill - you are just an annoying joke of a threat.

Killed semi-well-geared 70 prot warrior on my 64 soloing disc priest.
Prot warriors need a damage buff, it's hard for them to beat most casters.

As a protection warrior, in BGs you should be a flag carrier or simply bait. Bait is actually a very good distraction tactic, and in BGs almost everyone's action and position can make a drastic difference in the way events fold. Try to ignore fighting evenly.

Dude the key to beating casters is to make them think you are E-Z mode. Which in most cases, they already do. For example:

World PvP. Frost Mage starts casting Polymorph on me. Now I could easily jsut reflect it as I had just come off a mob with 28 rage and decreasing. I let him do it. He The battle progresses with him owning me as I shield bash and stuff, just basic textbook abilities. Finally, he gets me frozen and begins to cast frostbolt (mistake, he thinks I'm a dumbass). Last second spell reflect to hit him (FB + IL) for 6.2k, zerker, intercept, dmg trinket, ww + execute = dead mage.

Now this will never happen in a serious arena fight. But it will happen in bg's. It happens a lot. Rend is useless but piercing howl is godly. HS is also useless. Honestly be patient. It's about surviving and waiting for a cocky mistake. Realistically you will never win against someone who is out to kill you tactically and in the correct manner. You cannot put out the damage. Concussion blow is godly as well. It's all about stuns, keeping them close, and at the same time capitalizing.

Think that's all. SS is your asset here. It hits hard and gets rid off beneficial magic effects. OMG it's so good. Good luck man, it realyl won't be fun pvping prot without a healer buddy and maybe a mage.

As a prot warrior, you can lock someone down completly for 8+ seconds, depending on whether or not their trinket is up. Intercept > hamstring > concussion blow > intimadating shout. This is extremly useful for when you have that flag carrier all alone and just need to buy some time for you buddies to get to you.

Towards the orignal question, VS a caster, you definitly want to have a spell reflect macro (sadly, I dont have one for you, I just have my shield keybound to v in battle and berserker and Spell reflect in defensive, which is keybound to shift+e). You should definatly be locking them down with Conc. Blow and shield bash, useing spell reflect as needed, while spamming devastate. Spam devastate for two reasons, one is that its your best instant attack with not CD, and two is that you will bring their armor down to almost nothing. Other then that, just try to avoid them 1v1. Seeing as unless you time these things very well, you are probably going to lose. Prot just cannot match up to pure DPS specs in terms of damage.

You're dead.

Unless they are completely unskilled at their class, or you are completely over-geared compared to them, you are dead.

If you want to actually kill stuff reliably in PvP respec'ing is a must.

Similar stategy to a MS warrior or Fury, GET IN CLOSE. NOw spell reflect is a hell of a thing, a lot of fun and very effective for a prot warrior. However if the mage is good, you will only get one reflect on them or they will find ways to negate it all together. once your close dont let him cast a thing, think like a rogue, stun his *** till hes dead. Your spell reflect should be your OH **** button, when hes frost nova'd you in place or he sees you first and has starting casting from a distance. PROT warrior should always have a Shield on in PVP its the only advantage you got!!! and your DPS is all about your Shield Slam. Devastate is an after thought. Heroic strike is too expensive rage wise, by the time you have enough rage for HS your jsut about dead. Basically you got to get in his face and be a pro with the stuns, charge stun, concussion blow, shield bash when he casts and SS him to death. Not an easy fight but it can be done.

The problem that prot. warriors have in fights against casters is that your greatest assests (your high avoidance, armor and mitigation) are a total non-factor since thay give no protection against magic damage. Spell reflection is nice, but its high rage cost makes it difficult to have ready when you need it, and some attacks bypass it.

Your assets that you have are Shield Bass (which is hard to use against many casters since most of their spells are instant cast or fast casting), Hamstring, Intercept, Charge (if you can get the drop on them), Concussion Blow, Intimidating Shout (be mindful to stop your auto attack before using), and (if you have the rage to use it) Spell reflaction. Either CB and IS are likely to be negated by the PvP trinket, so burn CB first as it has a shorter stun time and shorter CD. Your high HP will also be an asset.

As far as talents go, Tactical Mastery is a must as you will be stance dancing while fighting casters. Imp. Defensive stance helps some too. Imp. Shield Wall is also great. It's just too bad the it has a 30 minute CD. Finally Imp. Shield Bash will be helpful since it'll stop them from casting for a few seconds even if you mistime your attack.

If your lucky and skilled, you'll win the fight if you get them down to the magic number 19% and can destroy them with an Execute. The odds are against you if they fear, stun or immobilize you (having your own PvP trinket is nice), but if you burn all your cooldowns and time you attacks right, you have a small but fighting chance.

Hope this helps =)
