Earliest level to try tankingFollow

Right now I'm leveling a Paladin to about level 24 or so to test whether I like the class or not. So far it seems acceptable to me (got her to level 16 atm). If I decide to stick with it, I plan on making her holy. However, I've tanked with a druid and a warrior before and want to respec to protection temporarily just to see the difference in tanking style and such.

What level would you all say is the best/earliest level to try tanking? I would assume after level 20 at least (when a pally gets consecrate...I hope I remember that correctly). I know pally's could probably tank from the start, but wanted to get at least a few abilities that would help the tanking more.

Thanks ahead of time for your replies. :)

I'd say level 16.. That's when you get Righteous Fury which actually allows you to generate more threat than your healer :D

Still.. as a tank, you gain more and more tools as you level -- the way you play changes. There's no real way of judging how it'll work until later.

I hope you have fun with your Paladin.

Where you're at now is good. I believe you have righteous defense and righteous fury, which is all you really need for low level instances.

I agree with Losie. Lvl 16 is a good start not only for the Righteous Defence, but you get your Ret Aura there too. I also agree that as you move down the prot tree the way you tank changes.
Yes, lvl 20 is nice with the Concerate, but in all honestly, you should only spam it once or twice to gain agro. It just eats up mana.

Lvl 16 Ret Aura and Righteous Fury (a must)
Lvl 22 Imp Righteous Fury (again a must)
Lvl 30 Blessing of Santary, another great and useful tool.
Lvl 40 you get Holy Shield, the most powerful tool (IMO) for a pally tank.
Lvl 42 Imp Holy Shield (again your bread and butter IMO)

At 38 and 40 you get Seal of Wisdom and Seal of Light. Very nice adds to your spellbook.

That is where I would say the best place to start tanking as a paladin is. You have all the basic and needed tools to be a good tank. From there it is gear for the most part.
Don't get me wrong... I started Prot and still haven't changed. I think pally tanks are just the supertanks of the game. But if you like to mix it up on your spec, then lvl 42. Make sure you have the gear when you switch over, or you won't like it much.

Good Luck.

At lvl 20 (when you get consecrate) would be my recommendation. There are so many idiots at that level, that you will probably need your AoE to be spammed.

However, if you have a good group, then start right now (like everyone else said).

Thanks everyone. Your recommendations were earlier than I would have expected. I think I might wait until level 20, though. One other question....does spec really matter at that low of a level for tanking or healing? I've already started filling out the holy tree and not sure I want to respec at this low of a level just yet in order to try the tanking. (I have all mail gear for soloing and a mix for healing so far.)

Spec doesn't really come into play until Outland. Some would even argue you can wait until lvl 70.

Proper specs will make your job easier (i.e. easier to tank as Prot, easier to heal as Holy, etc...), but is not required.

The general rule of thumb is to spec whatever you want while leveling. Once you hit Outland, you may want to try focusing on the end game spec you are planning. This will give you time to learn the spec (especially all the spec-specific talents) before hitting lvl 70. At lvl 70, most people expect you to know how to play your spec well.

Specs don't matter that much at that low a level. At levels 40+ they start to matter more, though you can still tank as holy or heal as ret.

I'll try the tanking at level 20 in my current spec, and then if I stick with the class, I'll respec prot in the mid 40's to get a better feel for a tanking pally.

Thanks again for your replies.

I have to mostly agree with this and it is common advice. Most players will suggest between 60 and 70 for the respec.

Just my two pennies: I tanked BRD as ret and just so happened to try a respec and tanked it again. I definitely noticed a big difference, no doubt. After tanking up to the mid-50s as ret, I never noticed any major issues, but it did seem to get trickier and trickier leading up to Outlands.

If you have a steady group of people to instance with, my suggestion would be to respec earlier and start learning the finer points of the 10-second rotation (heh, "finer points" :). If you're forced to pug a lot (and solo more often) then stay ret longer. Just my opinion of course.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of the Tankadin!
