hey all, i'm a noob 70 mage. my brother leveled a mage to 70, lost all sense of direction at endgame, and let my cousins mess around with his mage (got him trial fire trousers, harbinger bands, ruby slippers and ring of recurrence out of kara... but wearing 5 greens). then, last week he told me he was going to try out Age of Conan, so i got him to transfer his mage over to my account. at first, i struggled a bit with a totally different playstyle, but quickly got the hang of kiting frequently, using frost nova to snare, ice lance to pwn frozen targets and sheep to cc. as of this post, i've probably played him six or seven times, with raiding kara up to chess (we did the hallway method for aran... never again). even just following scorch x5 and fireball spam with combustion on bosses and keeping my trinkets on cd, i managed to impress people with my dps and total damage done... the toon fully buffed couldn't even manage 700 spell damage and 80 spell hit, but i managed to squeeze 600-700 dps out of him. on my 2nd kara, i got the handwraps of flowing thought, enough badges to buy the 41 badge crescent trinket, violet signet and went off to finish the group quest Showdown in BEM for the Tourmaline Crown.

at first, i was unlucky as Goc threw boulders at me twice, and with a first aid skill of 150 i wasn't able to regain any significant amount of health to avoid dying. a second try with a guildie druid to heal me, absolute luck avoiding boulders, and stacking icy veins/water elemental/trinket and then repeating with cold snap led to 1000 dps on my Recount with a build that looks like this. armory here, with w/e crap enchants i could manage out of the toon's limited inventory of enchants at 310/375, and crap rep across the board = no head/shoulder chants.

mage = dps hax. nuff said.

Well you should add that Kara = ezmode.

Wait til you need to get into much harder encounters and the dps isn't too bad. I played my roommates shadowpriest because he was out of town so I ran him through Kara. Got 2nd on the charts (only time ever playing one). Really isn't too hard to excel at a lower-end raiding/5man instance. That is pretty good dps though for your first time. Keep working at it and keep pushing the gear along.

oh and if you think mage = dps hax, wait until you see a 0/21/40 warlock (I believe is the build) with destruction they pretty much just spam shadowbolt and win dps.

Yep, 0/21/40 is a superior dps build for a warlock. You cast a corruption and spam shadowbolt x5, life tap and continue. No mana issues and very nice dps.

scorch x5>combustion>pop trink>spam firebolt/renew scorch?

Dont trinket + combustion for scorch, you only want to scorch as few times as possible. All your cooldowns should be used on fireballs, ideally right after a scorch stack is refreshed, and used together when possible (trinket + icy veins + combusion in MF range with bloodlust =D)

combustion + scorch = waste of crits.

sometimes i notice that the mob i am targeting is going down fast and most likely will not live long enough for my fireball to reach it. should i then

a) cancel fireball and spam scorch
b) start casting fireball on the next target (assuming a tank has built aggro on it)

I would:

c) Fireblast then move on to next target and start building scorches. (or fireball if it is not scorch worthy trash mobs)

A bit OT, but what is this of which you speak? I tried a google search, but came up with nothing.

Thanks!

Maybe you try to pull him into the hallway or stay out there or something? I don't know how it would work though with the door...

that's exactly how it works.

you have everyone standing in the hallway outside the door, but in front of the line on the floor. you open the door and have a hunter MD to a tank. occasionally, he will phase through the door and let you hit him with melee and spells, but blizzard doesn't affect you, the sucking in effect of his AE only slams you harmlessly into the door, the AE doesn't hit you, but i think the fire/frostbolts and arcane missiles still hit you. the mass poly and pyro still hit you also, and the elementals end up being summoned all four in your face, so it's a bit healing intensive at that point. there's also a good chance you'll run into his enrage timer, and though he summons something like a dozen adds that can oneshot your party they can't come through the door anyway.

i would recommend that you do it just once, to see what it's like, and then never do it again... ours took 15-20 minutes before we killed him.

btw, DON'T OPEN THE DOOR and make sure you kill him when he's on your side of the door. we managed to kill him in front of us, but then someone had the bright idea of opening the door and the adds aggro'd and oneshotted us. we were able to come back and loot though.

That seems abit of a waste, I Mean Aran isn't that hard, and 20 minutes is long time.
Later on DPS have to compete hard to stay top, and as said before 0/21/40 warlocks probably have the easiest time in raids-No mana problem and wonderful DPS, especially when a shadowpriest or another lock is there to stack debuffs.

we weren't lacking the dps to do it the normal way. someone in the raid thought it would be a bit of a novelty, and it was.

never again though.
