I'll afk at Dr. Boom this weekend to try and get some crit data. Any advice mulgrin? I guess as long as I have no crit boosting procs, It's just a matter of emptying my quiver into him a few times. Hopefully I'm not ganked.

I plan on dual-wielding to increase the difference. I'll post WWS of it after.

Uhm, I see this a little bit to late I guess (was away at a real life party of my raid group this weekend, it was a blast!).
To test this, i'd say use the fastest weapon you can get (to create a bigger sample size faster), use the cheapest arrows (obviously) and shot a lot of arrows (a few k with and without sharpening stones since the difference should total ~28crit rating).
I guess it would also help to go with as few crit rate as possible. When testing with 50% crit, a difference of 1.2% is not very noticable. With < 10% you'll notice the difference easier (though you still need a very large sample size to decrease the effects of the RNG).

Maybe I'm missing something... but is there any reason at all why 50 AP (300 AP for 10s every 60s) would be considered superior to ~4.8 DPS on your weapon plus 14 crit rating? Adamantite Weight/Sharpening Stones effect ranged attacks, and yet I never see any Hunters using them (or talking about using them); instead, they're all cranking the Blessed oil from the Sunwell daily.

What gives?

Where are you seeing the hunters with it on? Since the oil only works on the Quel'danas, MGT and sunwell, I would assume most people have no desire to buy stones for their dailies or even MGT since they will have an abundance of the free oils from their dailies. If your seeing them with it on in sunwell then maybe you should say something to them.

I tested the damage aspect of the sharpening stone (tested with a 5-10 damage bow; no +AP procs against Dr. Bumm).
Autoshot is affected (with a damage spread of 5 from the bow, one can see nicely that damage goes up after using a sharpening stone on my melee weapon).
Steadyshot is not! affected (damage range stays the same after applying the sharpening stone)
I also tested canceling the buff and reapplying the sharpening stone, the results are consistent.

It's odd that Steadyshot wasn't getting the effect, although I guess it could be one of those obnoxious inconsistencies (like... Sharpening Stones working at all, I suppose). It effects all of my melee attacks, even ones that aren't weapon-based... even Hamstring (fixed low damage) and Bloodthirst (...which you can even use without a weapon), which is kind of neat.

Still, I have my answer now.

I don't find it odd at all. Higher DPS arrows don't effect Steady Shot. It makes perfect sense that sharpening stones don't effect SS.

Save your mats and use the Fel Sharpening Stones instead. They add the same amount of damage, without the melee crit (which doesn't apply to our ranged anyway). I've just tested them out, and they work just as well as the normal Adamantite Sharpening Stones.
