I too was caught off guard, and have been wondering what people thought.
My $.02:
Generally speaking it's a cleaner, more attractive, and more sophisticated design and interface. It's certainly brighter...I feel like I need sunglasses compared to the old look. In main forum view, thread names need to be darker. The brown on beige, especially the light brown of 'read threads' is pretty hard to read.
Navigation to other areas of content is much better/cleaner as dropdowns at the top of the page, but I don't like how the site fills to full screen width...on my widescreen monitors it's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too wide. It should be in a centered block with a set width of 1000 pixels to prevent unecessary over-widening.
For work browsing I'd say it is actually less obvious what you're looking at because it's a lighter more corporate/appropriate look, logo notwithstanding. Most of the time you're scrolled down the page a bit anyway. The black and brown from before looks to me less like the sites you probably SHOULD be looking at. Then again, I work from home now so don't worry about that anymore. : )
