stacking block?Follow

ok gonna try to make a long story short doubt will happen. Ok so i was running kara farming with another prot pally. I said i wanted the warr shield from sso rep instead of pally one. He told me that pally one is better i told him i want it since i'm already like 4% or close to it over uncrushable and didnt wanna stack more block i wanted more pure avoidance. Eather way he wouldnt back down that it's better. I talked to guild about it and one of the raid leaders said the pally one is better will help for crushing blows inbetween holy shield drops due to latency/ stuns or what not. I tryed to tell him i'd rather dodge more attacks and maybe take 1 crushing blow than take repeated hits cause i'm not dodge/parrying as much.

So my question to ya'll is where is the happy area to stay at? i've been trying to get my dodge and parry and hp's up to the mt of our raid. Atm our guild is working on za and now that we are getting more peeps gruuls and mags are gonna start soon.

was gonna say armory is at bottom in sig but i logged out in healing gear for some reason. But my dodge is about 23 and some change parry is 16 or 17 and some change and wanting to say block is about 20 and some change. 13.2k hp 15.5k armor atm buff free still need the new badge loot.

any ideas suggestions comments?

Honestly I think it's personal preference. I personally take the dodging route. I'm usually MT in our Kara and ZA runs, so dodge is more important to me - as you said, pure avoidance will keep you alive easier than non-pure avoidance. I've seen another pally go the blocking route, and he does just fine. But I'd say the deciding factor would be if you find yourself tanking bosses more often than not - then my opinion would be dodge over block.

The Sunward Crest will NOT HELP WITH CRUSHING BLOWS BETWEEN HOLY SHIELDS.

I don't understand why people think this... Let's assume with Holy Shield up you have EXACTLY 102.4% combined block & avoidence, and for simplicity you AREN'T using the Libram. That means with Holy Shield down you have 72.4%. There's a 15% chance of eating a crushing blow and a 15% chance of eating a regular hit. Unless you somehow magically pull 15% more avoidence out of your *** to eliminate the chance of eating a REGULAR hit, you do NOTHING to reduce the chance of eating a crushing blow. You'd have to have OVER 87.4% PASSIVE Block+Avoidence to even START making a difference on crushing blows -- so the raid leader who suggested that to you clearly doesn't fully understand tanking mechanics. And no one better say "Well, maybe he's just a Warrior and doesn't get how Pallies work" because the difference is even BIGGER for Warriors, we already have a higher passive block+avoidence since they get things easy with Shield Block.

In your situation, the Dawnforged is probably the better shield. Really, the only thing that the Sunward has going for it in your set-up is a significant chunk of Spell Damage. If you're still using a ~120 Spell Damage weapon you probably almost NEED the extra Spell Damage for the level of content that you are geared to handle -- but with the ease of obtaining a Cudgel of Consecration (or a PvP Mace to a lesser extent) you should probably be good already. Still -- more threat isn't a bad thing.

23% is a TON of Dodge for Kara btw.. Mana starvation city -- I agree that, depending on the rest of your raid, you're probably ready to start moving up. As you go, don't sacrifice HP for Dodge though. By the nature of Spiritual Attunement.... if 23% is too high to keep a good stream of Mana coming in in Kara but it's not bad for Gruul.. then you must be getting hit HARDER rather than more often against Gruul. Which means you'll need a bigger HP pool to soak up the hits that DO land.

*PS* Read my Shield's thread (it's linked in the Shield section of my Sticky) for more thoughts on all these shields.

the only benefit the sunward crest provides is spell damage.

in regards to your dodge/block itemization, personally, i've always geared towards dodge because i'd rather not take a hit and hits taht i do block are still generally pretty large enough to give me mana back when i get healed.

however, i've recently found that in places like karazhan and heroics, I am severely mana starved during fights because of all the dodge/parries that are occuring.

I dont think thats a big deal though cuz I'm taking one of two routes:
a) pull more
b) sit down in combat.

anyway. yeah, I'd go with dodge, onlyquestion is how much of a factor this becomes on raid trash because if you're aoe tanking and not generating holy shield aggro, you better have some high spell damage to hold em with consecrate and judgemenets (or pray they are undead)

yeah i ran norm sl and i took off my legs belt and trinket and still was oom and healer full think healer was ssc geared though i was just helping a guildie. i noticed in za lack of mana regen then again i also noticed the ot tauning trash off me till i had none. i'm gonna have to work with gear and the group cause if i cant get the mana back i'll go all block for avoidance.
