We've got a druid healer in our guild who posed the following question to me, which I'm not 100% sure of the answer to.

If i save badges and buy gear with them ill loose mp5 but gain both spirit and bonus heal....just wanna know im not doing anything stupid....

She is talking about the SSO badge gear, she's got a stack of badges saved up but is concerned about running low on mana, I personally think that she will be fine and the +spirit will compensate for the loss of direct mp5.

The raid she is in is clearing Kara weekly and also progressing through ZA.

Any thoughts would be very welcome.

Tough choices!

On many occasion, I have replaced something that had pure MP5 on it with something that had none, but had slightly better stats, and was surprised to see that it actually boosted my mana regen. The effet of spirit or even intellect depends on the build, for example int is important for me as I currently use the dreamstate build.

In her situation, I'd find a piece of equipment that only has spirit, equip it and note the mana regen values. Then take it off and see again. That will give a good idea of the effect of spirit on mana regen :)

Or maybe someone will post some of their magical wow math, of which I understand little. Don't look at me, I just click the green bars! :P

In my honest opinion, for a ToL Resto Druid (I'm assuming this is what this healer is), Spirit is going to trump raw MP5 stats. Most ToL Builds incorporate 3 points into Living Spirit, which accounts for a 15% Spirit boost. This, along with a good Mana pool from Intellect (which now also accounts for a degree of Mana Regen while casting) is better than raw, base MP5 stats on gear. So in essence like Phoenix said, they may see an actual "increase" in Mana Regen while casting instead of a drop while favoring the increase of Spirit.

Self buffed I'm at 202 Mana Regen while casting. Raid buffed, over 300. This is why you'll see a lot of Resto ToL Druids pass on Shard of the Virtuous and aim to get Light's Justice from Karazhan. It's an extremely nice healing Mace, and it has Spirit on it instead of raw MP5 on the Shard...which is better for Paladin's & Shaman's.
