MM hunter with no petFollow

Was running the daily mech a few days ago on my BM hunter, and our group was myself a MM hunter, holy priest, fury warrior and pally tank. We start with the first few trash pulls and I notice that the MM hunter never pulls out his pet. I don't think much about it and we continue on....hit first boss, MM hunter finally pulls out pet, but just has it on passive so it just stands by his side.

Now granted I know that MM hunters are spec'd for ranged damage more than a BM hunter, but still the added dps of 2 pets, vs just my poor little cat would make some difference, right?

Needless to say it took us quite a while to clear mech on normal....fairly annoying. Throughout it all the MM hunter either just had his pet stand right next to him or would just dismiss him at random times. Hell he rarely if ever even dropped a trap on those rare occasions that the pally tank couldn't hold aggro on all the mobs.

So for those of you MM hunters, am I confused? Shouldn't even and a MM hunter you use a pet in instances just for the added DPS, granted it's not as comparable as a BM hunter's pet, but still DPS is DPS right?

This gets posted at least once a month. I just don't get why people even question this.

Every hunter should use a pet. Yes, a marksman's pet damage is less than a BM's pet's damage, but it's damage nonetheless. You should have kicked the other hunter and brought in someone who wasn't stupid.

sadly it wasn't up to me, I was the only non-guildie in the run. Glad to know I wasn't wrong

While I, obviously, agree that even MM hunters need to have a pet by their side when they want to deal damage, it's still fun to joke around with some people about it (when a group isn't depending on you).

I've had a number of moments where I was running around on my hunter (or warlock) with my pet dismissed and not showing. If I was traveling through a questing region and not in a big city, I sometimes had people whisper me with things like "dude where's yer pet?" or "hey what pet have you got??"

I'd stop myself, pause for about fifteen seconds as if I was thinking and then send back a reply: "... pet? I'm a hunter(/warlock)! what pet!?"

Then I just keep running and try to imagine the facial reaction of the other person as they fight the urge to laugh, scream and possibly vomit at me all at once.

Beyond comedy or saving food, there are VERY few instances where not having a pet at your side is a benefit. There are some places in Gnomer that I choose to dismiss my pet as nearly that entire instance can be brought to your feet by your pet, just due to the way it's built. I know, I've done it once.

A hunter should always have a pet if they are anticipating combat. On a PvP server, outside of a city, this is pretty much all the time. In the city, not having the pet out can be a good thing, uses less food. On a PvE server, well, if you are in safe zones you can be without them just fine if you are 3 levels or so higher than the area mobs you are around. Don't bust anyones chops for not having a pet out in relatively safe areas. In an instance, insist they work with their pet or one of the two of you leave the group. I could see it in some areas of gnomer but haven't really run across any other 'bad' places, maybe the falls in mara but that's a dismiss and resummon.

Has anyone else noticed that now we have to stand still while we feed our pets? They lose the feed pet effect if you start moving, at least it does for me. Drives me nuts. It makes sense, but still, this means I have to make the party wait while I feed my pet now. Sheesh.

The only end-game situation that I can think of where a pet can wipe a raid is cheating through ZA on the way to the Lynx boss. If you pass the pats by jumping through the huts, a pet will go around and aggro the pat.

I had to learn that one the hard way... twice /cry

At 70 I usually spec my hunter hybrid, with enough points in Survival to get the trap enhancements and the rest in Marksman which usually doesn't allow me to get silencing shot anymore.
The behavior you describe I confess I use in combination with a turtle as pet, when either I'm in a pug with people I don't trust and don't know how they play or when I'm in a group with people who I know don't know to play their class too well.
Then I keep the pet next to me (turtle does no damage anyhow but can work well to offtank even for a non BM) make sure growl is always on and when things get out of control and my FD is on cooldown the turtle can buy me the time together with traps and kites so that at least I don't have to die.
You don't mention the dps chart, I assume that hunter who you describe was high on the list.

There isn't necessarily one and only one way to play your class right. It always depends on who you are grouped with, how those players know to play their class and then to add your own abilities so that the group has the highest chance to succeed.

Good luck,

Ara

If he was Marks and not using a pet, I doubt it.

What in he wold do you want to get out of MM beyond Barrage/scatterhot?
Unless you PvP Marks doesnt have all that much to offer and going a hybrid build with bothe Sv and MM half-assed you severely gimp yourself.
Either go 0/43/18 for a build that will do decent in PvP and 5-mans or go 0/21/40 and become a 5-man god.

So because you dont know how well your groupmates play you intentionall gimp yourself?
Great way to get yourself known as a huntard.

Even as terrible as a turtle is at dps, I'm quite sure it'll still do 30-40 dps.
Wich, even if you yourself manage to put out ~800 dps combined is 5% dps.
And I'm pretty damn sure that you dont get that much dps.

Also, Turtles cant really survive much longer than other pets and they cant hold or take aggro at all.

And euhm, learn to feign death?

Only if the OP was using his nose to push buttons and the fury warrior was blind.

It's true that dps is greatly affected by group composition but I cant see how you can possibly link that to skill or the skill of your party.

Any hunter who doesnt use his/her pet needs to bang his head against the wall in the hope of knocking some sense into their brain.
Really, you should try it.

O.o why did I get rated down for that? was it an unreasonable question? I just think some people are unnecessarily mean here sometimes...

No Pet?! What Hunter does any instance without his/her/their pet doinf DPS?
Turnoff growl fine let em sit there and gnaw/gore/claw w/e on whomever is the target.

Any Hunter that acts like this shouldbe kicked IMHO. As a lvl 70 Hunter, i rarely see LFG Need Hunter and GTG. LOL, we get no (or little) respect as it is and dummies like this just add to the Huntard entry in the Dictioanry.

My 2cents...

I have seen LFM "hunter" requests. Some instances and situations are just hunter turf. Normally you'll see spammed "LFM: DPS, Tank" etc. Hunters can answer the DPS call.

You don't write like Shatner, not enough commas.

concolor, never bring up karma around here, it gets you rated down just on principal. After seeing a 17 post sage, I think it's overrated. As for the insults around here, get a thick skin or don't post. It's like a bloodsport in this forum. ^_^

Aethien, you just dropped a few pegs on my "people I won't "accidentally" kill or dismember when I finally snap" list. Got an internet connection, went to check the posts and got all happy when I read his post. Then you came and spoiled the fun. I'll be watching you, Aethien...

Seriously, check outside your bedroom window right now!
