OK let me preface: 51 Hunter solo BM spec. I've, through lazy pulls or intention, exercised quite a few of my skills (though I'll admit I still can't kite worth a crap). I can trap/chain trap well (exception being the kiting thing) and generally pay attention. Also I have a 70 mage who is quite used to the whole frost nova/pull aggro to protect the healer thing (why I'm usually the one doing this as a mage I'll never know, but that's another thread)

So I was in ST tonight. It was a paladin tank (who I also have a lvl 70 of), fury war, priest healer (didn't check spec but they did well, REALLY well), tailed DPS (cat druid) and me.

It largely went ok, and I think I did ok but... there were a few times where it went NUTS. And I didn't feel like I could control it as well as I wanted to.

As a mage I would stand next to the healer and paste stuff - if the healer pulled aggro: FN, wait, pull aggro, die if necessary, etc if things went awry.

As a hunter I find myself standing away for trapping purposes - I'll trap to one side or lay one ready and stand behind it "just in case" and if something's trapped I'll move to the other side and lay another when the cd is up and, again, stick by it to pull it in. I just don't feel comfortable trapping right next to the healer, that just seems really dumb (is that wrong or right?)

But because I'm sort of oblique (and because the healer would sort of get close to the fray) I had a REALLY hard time finding which mob, if any got loose, targeting it and getting it off.

I don't know if this is because I'm used to higher level instances and lucky charms or what but our healer died once and I sort of take that as my fault. But it was - and please don't take this as an excuse, it's not - hard to see.

So is there a way to see better? A way to tell if my healer has aggro? It was a bit of a goat rope all around, but again, that's no excuse. My healer died and I didn't save them.

Any tips on effectively protecting the kind person that heals us? It seemed so much easier as a mage. Smiley: frown

I really don't want to be "that hunter", you know?

In those situations, I allways Distracting Shot and Arcane Shot the mob targeting the healer, then kite him around the room as long as possible, or at least untill the tank can pick him up. But since you say youre not that good in kiting, the only other way I can think of is putting a trap in front of the healer, but that only works if youre off trapping-duty.

And if a healer dies, it's most of the time his or the tank's fault, unless a cc breaks. In this case you certainly shouldn't feel like it's your fault ;)

In 5-mans, I tend to stick near the healer so I can drop a trap at their feet, or use Intimidation on the mob attacking the healer.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with laying a trap at the healer's feet. Freezing trap isn't like Frost Nova, so the mobs can't attack the healer while trapped. 9 times out of 10, if a healer sees a frozen mob standing at his feet, he'll move out of the way, so the tank can get it back.

Granted, we have a harder time getting multiple mobs off of a healer. But if a healer has a ton of mobs on him, he either did something wrong, or the tank wasn't doing his job.

I agree with dropping a trap either right in front of the healer or just to the side. Also a good way to tell if the healer is getting aggro is to simply watch their health bar, when you see it slipping down, chances are pretty good that they have aggro.

Hunter CC at yoru level is a little lackluster. Traps just dont last very long, you dont have the full gambit of tricks to use. As i was leveling up i was rarely asked to CC pre-outland. That leaves you open to kinda do independant ops. I would suggest a freeze trap before pulls. Put it in front of the healer, i still do this if i am not needed as direct CC. If something breaks away it will get frozen, at least for a short time, until some *** hat breaks it. On top of your traps you have Intimidate, i hope, Arcane, Distracting, Wingclip. What is your race? Tauren have warstomp, that is always handy.

You have the right idea, i also see that all this stuff was said by others. Great minds think alike. I will say that grouping while leveling is usually a wild ride and often frustrating. Do what you can. At those levels Intimidate is great snap aggro and your pet can still tank stuff for a few more levels.

Thank you guys so much for the replies. While there are clearly and certainly things I can learn (stupidly, FN != Ice trap Healers feet is a GOOD thing) I'm not really what I feared I was either.

Thanks again.

I've always found the following combo to be quite effective for pulling people off healers:

Distracting Shot
Arcane Shot
Concussive Shot (Dazes the target)
Steady Shot (bonus damage from Dazed effect is key)
Distracting Shot (cooldown is used up by now)

If the mob isn't off the healer at that point, either your tank or healer royally screwed up. Still, you may be able to salvage it by dropping a Freezing Trap. Do not set your pet on the mob until you've got the aggro. If you set the pet onto it early and end up needing to trap, it's far too easy to accidentally let your pet unfreeze the mob, and then you're screwed.

I also recommend you have your guild use Omen(on this list) or Threat 2.0 (on this list).
The former is a UI addon which displays a readout of each party member's current threat on targets (various modes, very useful and powerful if used correctly)
The latter is a library which reports threat information to party members using Omen, without the UI addon. If you don't want the readout, it's still courteous to help out your party members who do.
