New Shaman - Healing Pre-BC?Follow

I am new to the Shaman world, I have a level 70 mage in T4 level epics and have become somewhat bored with her. I primarily do dailes and raid, and have been lax on the dailies lately. So I rolled a shaman with some friends. Our group is a Hunter, Warlock, and me (Shaman). I want to heal, but for leveling I am planning on a nice Enhancement spec.

Do I need to have points in resto to be effective in the 5-mans pre-BC content? Or will an enhancement spec work? I imagine at 60 I will switch to a more resto spec to heal all the outlands instances. We just reached 20, averaging about a level an hour, and I just wanted to get some shaman advice.

Having been DPS for the past year and a half, healing is a whole new world to me, so it is taking some time to get used to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

No, you do not need to be specced resto to heal effectively (pre-BC)...you will need a gear set for it though. I went that route (I leveled as enhancement and kept a healing set on me for instances).

Awesome! I figured you didn't have to be specc'd. Appreciate the response. I have already started working on gathering healy gear...Currently I have +4 healing!! Yay me! lol. We probably won't instance until SM, so by then I should have a nice set together, going to look out for some clothie gear to boost the healing.

Honestly, as said above, you really don't need to respec to resto until 70. At least that's what I did. I did very well healing all the way to 70 specced at elemental (respecced to element from enhancement at 60 to play around with it), and using some healing gear.

Actually...don't focus on +Healing. My shamy is 63 and resto but until 58 i was enhancement... despite this I healed all the instances i was in except 1. you will need a healing set that consists of +int. That's all you really need. If you pay attention u can heal just fine. at 58 i turned resto and I love it. Tired of dps... so healing is nice :). And i really like resto healing.. more than my priest's :P Enjoy your healing!

I am totally loving it so far, although I have only really had to heal when we accidently pulled 5 mobs that were 3+ levels more than us :) That was interesting, 1 mana pot, 1 health stone, and some bandages later, I was OOM and we were all alive :)

I can't wait to actually heal my first instance!

You should be able to heal most things just fine, though a few points in Resto would really help. Improved Healing Wave is really amazing, and a must if you don't plan on having any other healers along. Once you get Chain Heal, things become very easy indeed. :)

Int will probably be very important to you since you won't have Mana Tide totem; don't forget to keep Mana Spring down all the time.

As for a more general healing tip: downrank! There's noting more frustrating than either a: completely overhealing because you only use the max rank and end up oom too quickly, or b: having some mana, enough for a lower rank spell, and having your target die while you fumble in your spellbook for it. What I do--I think everyone's method is a little different--is to keep 4 ranks of Healing Wave and 1 of Lesser Healing Wave on my bars, moving LHW around depending on comparative healing power. Max rank of Chain Heal always stays out; I haven't started downranking it yet, though, perhaps I should.

Thanks for the advice!! Downranking is something I never thought of. With my mage I just go all out lol. I will def put some lower ranks in there and in my healbot. I am starting to get the hang of it, but I do tend to overheal quite a bit. Still very green when it comes to healing, so sometimes I panic lol. Good thing I am running with 2 guildies that I have gotten to be friends with :)

Yeah, downranking is great for saving mana, especially if it's a fast moving group. I usually just spam LHW. The only time I'll throw a big heal (like HW), is if someone get's to 50% (like in a boss fight, where LHW won't do the trick), then I'd be able to fill them back up.
