So I just dinged 70... What now?Follow

I dinged 70 about a week ago and I am pretty clueless about where to start obtaining good purple gear. I've tried reading through 'gearing mages for Kara' etc. posts, but most of them are just dealing about respeccing.

Do I do PvP and try and get rewards?
Or should I buy off the AH?
Or should I start tailoring?
Or should I convince my guildies to let me run Kara with them and try to get drops and enough badges for good gear?

I'm just needing some ideas on where to go next.. what items are an upgrade from what I have now, and that are not -too- impossible to attain with my current gear.

Thankyou :)

It depends on what you want to do. Do you want to do PvE, PvP or both?

depends on your play style. i opted to start pvp as it is the only way to 100% get good gear upgrades. i would NOT buy gear in AH, gems are an other story. run instances, get keyed for kara, get gear upgraded so you can start running heroics and start you dailies.

also keep in mind that all quests now give coin and in some cases you also get +rep.

have you picked scryer or aldor yet? i chose scryer as i want the better DPS gear and i do not tailor. i went mining + JC.

As far as getting started for the PvE raiding scene, tailoring is a huge plus, although not...entirely, neccesary. Spellfire and FSW will be a tremendous gain, looking back at it I should've gone Spellfire myself, but oh well.

As far as the rest of the gear, it's up to you. I'd recommend running the regular level 70 instances so that way you can get some decent gear to set up for the heroics. You need to get badges so you can get some damn fine epics, and around the time you're geared for heroics, if you are a tailor, you should have your epic tailor set made.

From the looks of your armory page, you have a lot of work to do...

Ok, drop the Soulcloth Gloves. I know, they're EPIC, but that doesn't mean it's good. I know this because I replaced the Soulcloth Gloves with a green that dropped in Kara.

You can't look at an item in terms of color, you have to consider the stats. I made the same error.

I also suggest going after the D3 stuff at the very least.

NO. You are way to undergeared and you have a crap hitting rating and crap spell damage. Sorry, but that's the truth, ask any one of us if I'm lying.

Read that. Trust me. You'll thank me.

Just remember that obtaining gear is a progression. You will have much better luck going Normal Instances> Heroics> Begining Raids than you will just asking to be boosted through content.

I remember when i hit 70. I was so happy, then a few minutes later i was complaining about how i have to grind reputation and run aload of instances before i start doing anything.

I suggest looking for instances with good clothie drops and D3 sets will gear you up pretty fast, along with doing a bit of pvp, the vindicators wrists are Really good, and some pvp stuff will do for instances when gearing up. IF you wish to PvE more, don't gem up with spell pen and solid star of elune.. I've seen too many mages with PvE gear and resi/sta gems. Makes me QQ...

Thanks so much for all the help :)
(The link to the mage gear page is EXACTLY what I was looking for)

I want to mostly PvE, mostly just run Kara with my guildies, I got a taste of it the other day when it was 3 in the morning and they couldn't get anyone else, I loved it, and now I want the gear to be able to do it with them without pulling down the team and being embarassed about the fact that yes, I do have greens :(

The soulcloth gloves were a bit of a 'now i have PURPLE' kinda buy, lol, plus they were a slight upgrade from my previous gloves, which were incredibly crap, lol.

Heya.
You can get 698 damage unbuffed, 21% crit and almost max spell hit rating only from normal instance loot and AH (until you make your tailoring stuff), with proper enchants and gems.
The stuff you need would be the following:

gem #1: Glowing Nightseye
gem #2: Chaotic Skyfire Diamond
enchant: +22 Spell Power and +14 Spell Hit Rating
Neck: Brooch of Heightened Potential
Back: Sethekk Oracle Cloak
Shoulders: Mana-Etched Spaulders
gem #1: Veiled Noble Topaz
gem #2: Runed Living Ruby
enchant: +15 Spell Critical Strike Rating and +12 Spell Damage and Healing
Chest: Robe of the Crimson Order
enchant: +6 All Stats
Waist: Sash of Sealed Fate
Legs: Devil-Stitched Leggings
gem #1: Veiled Noble Topaz
gem #2: Veiled Noble Topaz
gem #3: Glowing Nightseye
enchant: +35 Spell Damage and +20 Stamina
Feet: Shattrath Jumpers
gem #1: Veiled Noble Topaz
gem #2: Veiled Noble Topaz
enchant: Minor Speed and +9 Stamina
Wrist: Goldenvine Wraps
enchant: +15 Spell Damage
Hands: Gloves of Oblivion
enchant: +20 Spell Damage
Ring: Seal of the Exorcist
Ring #2: The Black Pearl
Trinket: Shiffar's Nexus-Horn
Trinket #2: Xi'ri's Gift
Main Hand: Greatsword of Horrid Dreams
enchant: +40 Spell Damage
Off hand: Lamp of Peaceful Radiance
Wand: Nether Core's Control Rod

For PvE: If you have time for instances start checking what drops in which heroics. Run Kara if you can. Finish your group quests in places like Netherstorm and Shadowmoon Valley. Although not as good as Kara or tailoring gear, its good stopgap if you find the friends to help you.

Check out the "Tier .5" gear on each of various rep vendors (Thrallmar/Honor Hold, Cenarian Circle, Lower City, etc). They each sell one piece.

Since I didn't have a lot of time for raiding or instances, I started with tailoring. A full set of Spellfire and Spell Strike (5 pieces total) cost me a lot (horray for dailies), but once I started having to the time for raiding, there wasn't much in Kara that would replace those pieces because of their set bonuses.

If you like PvP you could try and do some battlegrounds and get S1 PvP gear. For DPS classes they probably are good starters for even for PvE. Of course if you are planning on arena, PvP gear is best for PvP. Tends to have the STA and resilience you'll need. PvE gear, especially before Kara level gear doesn't have the STA or resilience you'll need.
