Question regarding talents from a friendFollow

A friend of mine has asked me in regarding to respeccing his talents to suit his casual PVE play

He is well-geared in 4 out of 5 T4 tanking armour sets and was originally specced in the cookie-cutter Tanking spec similar to RPZip's talent build in the stickies.

However due to his time constraints and having to juggle with real-life he decided to dedicate his time to help his guild by raiding in the beginner's raids ( Kara, Gruul, Mag and sometimes Zul'Aman ) to help gear the newer members in his guild

Since he told me before that he prefer the newer members, especially new tanks to tank the easy bosses while he goes and DPS with a 2-handed weapon with slam-rotations, only to step-in as tank for harder bosses

This is the talent he came up with, any suggestion?

I'm going to assume you did a typo, and wrote T4 instead of T6. If I'm wrong, let me know. Of course, if a t6 war can't figure out his own talents there might be something wrong. I'd point him to www.tankspot.com to read some guides.

That said, you don't want to try to tank without devastate. Even just subbing in for harder bosses, the threat from devastate cannot be ignored. There really is no point in trying to main tank anything without it.

The talent build you linked doesn't even have improved slam, so the plan to "DPS with a 2-handed weapon with slam-rotations" would actually make you lose damage. There is literally no point to slam without the talent maxed.

My suggestion for what your friend plans to do is simply get pull dps d/w gear, go protection spec to get devastate, and just dual wield and spam devastate, heroic strike, and whirlwind. Not as much damage as being fury spec, but close enough. And you have the talents to main tank bosses.

as far as a prot tank DPSing in a 10/25man Zeyno kind of summed up the basics. A prot tank tossing on 2 1h weapons and keeping devastate going but keeping whirlwind on CD is about the best DPS you can get, heroic strike if your rage fills up too fast.

As for the spec you suggested not getting devastate is not the best idea if he still plans to tank bosses with the very same spec. I would say simply for convenience sake (not having to respec for 1-2 bosses per raid or crippling himself when he needs to tank) have him stay somewhat close to the normal tanking spec. Improved heroic strike, improved sunder armor, focused rage, one handed weapon spec and cruelty not only help in tanking situations but will help his dps while he is not tanking but lowering the cost of some abilities allowing him to click them faster.

Personally I feel a spec like this would keep your friend a good MT along with allowing him to put out some nice dps while not tanking with 2 1h's

I thank you for your replies

Well basically he is in a high lvl guild that is busy doing Serpentshire Cavern and Tempest Keep, was their number 2 tank before but as usual due to time constraints was unable to join in the raid group

He told me that despite not having the talent "Improved Slam" he was still able to do a rotation successfully although to a lesser degree in terms of damage, guess I need to ask him how he does it.

I like the talent build. If he isn't going to MT that often, or tank at all that often, thats the spec I would go for. Thats what I love about our talent trees, many hybrid variations are available.
