Acceptable Frost DPS?Follow

#1 May 30 2008 at 3:07 AM Rating: Good
Hey, I'm getting back into the swing of things, raiding again, and here is something that I'm not sure of that maybe a couple of you more experienced raiders can inform me on.

How good is 676 DPS at Gruul's and/or ZA? I think it's enough, my Frostbolts usually hit somewhere in the 1500 range now, with my trinketed/arcane powered crits getting as high as 5200 with normal trinket/AP hits about 2100. Is this enough to be effective in those two instances or do I need more?

676 is acceptable in Gruul's, if a little low. More would obviously be better, though.

600-700 is a bit low for gruuls, and especially for ZA, I would normaally expect 800+ from what I remember, but that was a year and a half ago that I raided Gruul's.

Can you post up your armory?

I loaded up a WWS from a guild I can count on to be doing just as much as needed and no more. They were in the 650-750 range for the most part.

That's where I got my numbers. Smiley: laugh

I found a few problems with your gear:

First of all, are you using this same gear to do pvp?

Try to get the spellstrike set if you can grind up the mats (or have the funds) those should help you a good deal over the battlecast hood (bad) and the gladiator's pants.

Your cloak is not really made for mages, there is no damage, just white stats and mp5. Work towards either getting the one from HKM, Prince, or a badge one.

You have a green gem in your shoulders, chest, and boots, get rid of that asap.

What is with all the int/stam gems? Switch those out for either +dmg or +spellhit until you get to hit cap (126 as a frost mage). You are aware that you do not need to make the socket colors, correct?

Work on getting rid of those gloves, there are some decent badge ones. Same with bracers, but replce the gloves asap and get a +20 spelldmg enchant on them, and then +15 spelldmg on the bracers when you replace those.

Your boots are also missing an enchant, I recommend either fortitude (12 stam) or boar's speed (9stam + movement speed)

ahh good to know, *pulls out old cane and monocole* back in my day we all had to push 800deepeeess to look like a capable raider at Gruul's lair. Then had to run back to shattrath from Blades edge -- up hill, both ways!

Some of it is left over PvP gear, because the bottom line is that it's an improvement over what I DID have; everything else SUCKED. Khadgar's Kilt of Abjuration, etc. Not the best gear in the world.

As far as gems go, believe me, I have been looking in my AH for some, but nobody cuts what I'm looking for. It sounds absurd, but this morning as I was going through, there was jack crap for a mage.

Anobix, if I could ask, what is wrong with the Battlecast Hood? Ohhh, Spell Hit...right.

Smiley: frown (...1300G down the drain)

Ok, so, since Spellstrike might be a little hard to come by on my server, what are some reasonable alternatives?

I find this all the time. What worked best for me was to buy the raw gem, and then ask a JC to cut it. If you don't know a JC that can cut it, then ask in /2. It may take a while, but you'll eventually find one. IMPORTANT - tip the JC well (I usually give a min of 10g for a Rare cut. Much more for an epic.), and ask if you can add them to your Friend list. You may need to call on them again.

With the caveat that spellstrike is your absolute best option at the moment, other options include:

Mana-Binder's Cowl(sold by G'eras)
Collar of the Aldor(my personal favorite)
Wicked Witch's Hat
Uni-Mind Headress(my second choice)

And finally, if you're insane enough to powerlevel Engineering...

Destruction Holo-gogs - better than T5, iirc.

As for the pants part of Spellstrike, you won't get anything better than either of these anytime soon:

Legwraps of Sweltering Flame
Corrupted Soulcloth Pantaloons

Also, you are revered with sha'tari go get the better trinket and bank Vengeance of the Illidari

edit: also heroic mech drops the epic gem 5 spell hit & 6 spell dmg. Fits in red and yellow slots I believe

If it makes you guys feel better, I remember a time when I would have killed for Khadgar's Kilt of Abjuration. I was pretty deep in Kara before I replaced those hideous green pants from the BF quest, iirc.

i have not run gruuls or ZA yet (highest i have run is kara, and that only once) my best DPS was in heroic mec the other night and i hit roughly 550DPS im frost+arc.

as i continue to upgrade my gear i expect to see my DPS climb higher though. grouped with a mage several levels back (he was 70 at the time i was only 66 or so, maybe 67) and his DPS was 800+ and he was NOT trying hard so he said.

i always considered battlecast to be somewhat of a pvp option. remember, it was available right from the start at 70 (so over a year ago). resilience was brand new and very little gear was available.
heavy sta, crit, spelldamage makes it look much more like pvp than the spelldamage, hit, 3 gems spellstrike.

Thank you for all the feedback; tonight we're going back to Gruul's, possibly following it up with Magtheridon. I'm going to be hitting tonight with at least 1051 bonus Frost damage, and I'm two points away from the hit cap; while I believe that Gruul's should be decent, I'm worried about Mag since I have no clue what to expect.

Mags is now easy mode. Pray you aren't the cube clicker and try to time a hit for each time he's rebanished. I love those big hits on him.
#22 Jun 05 2008 at 7:34 PM Rating: Good
Third on the charts tonight, with 910 overall DPS. I'd say that's quite an improvement.

Mags didn't happen, we had some issues with Maulgar; We'll get to that when we have Maulgar on farm.
