gear choice for dps as prot specFollow

#1 May 29 2008 at 11:48 AM Rating: Decent
Hello All,

I have found myself in situations as an OT were I need to switch to do DPS because of random agro bosses. I have been collecting a decent dps offgear set but I am wondering what are the best stats to look for being prot spec i.e. what attributes will get me the most dps as prot spec

Also better to two hand or or dual wield?

I have a pretty normal prot spec nothing unusual in the tree

Thanks for the help

you will definitely be dual-wielding so you can spam devastate, and you get a boost from 1h specialization.

other than that, get the highest dps weapons you can find, get your hit rating up to 10%, and stack strength/AP. throw in some crit when you can.

So would it be better to dual wield these http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=28267;source=live

edge of cosmos with +20 str on them
or use on edge of cosmos +20 str with the suneater and mongoose http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=29362;source=live

Prot tanks with the right gear can generate a decent (not great, decent) amount of dps without changing much gear (usually just a couple of trinket and ring changes)

Get a +hit trinket
Get +hit or +strength rings
Get a +hit and +expertise neck piece
Get a fel shield spike on your shield.
Get a Gnomeregan Auto-Blocker 600
Get sharpening stones

A +12 stone on a fast weapon (1.5 or 1.6) is a lot of extra damage.
That fel shield spike will up damage as well.
and using the auto-blocker with a good macro that gives you 4 swings every 2 minutes ain't shabby either.

Stance dance around, use your abilities, and you will get good dps. You won't out-pace a rogue, but you'll be solidly in the middle of the pack.

You might go a bit higher with dual wielding, but if you go that route, get a good mod to flip back to your tank set in a hurry if the MT goes down fro some reason. But if you have the shield specialization, a shield with a high block rating, lots of +block gear, and the auto-blocker, you may have a hard time doing significantly more.

For you gear, get your expertise up to at least 26, and your attack as high as possible. Don't worry too much about crit chance and crit raiting, you're not a rogue and you don't play one on TV. You want to get the highest number of hits for white damage as you can. Expertise is important because it stops parries. Parries are bad anyway (they speed up the boss's next attack). But stopping them helps your dps alot.

Just a couple notes on the last post:
  • For all the block suggestions, they will not help you at all with dps when you're not taking hits.
  • For a random aggro boss, as the OP asked about, there is no need to equip a shield (think Aran)

Quick summary: Dual-wield highest dps weapons you can find, load up on STR > AP > Crit, and spam devastate.
