I justed dusted off my stereotypical first main -- yes, a nelf hunter -- to run in outland with a friend. My guy's 58 and I never took him through the dark portal, he's been hibernating for almost a year. So off I went, landed in Honor Hold and found the reward for the first quest was a....crossbow.

Problem is, back when I had no clue how to play this game, I never trained in crossbows (or guns). I just stuck with the bow I was born with. Now I see that not just the intro orc quest but other HFP quests have crossbow rewards. Not bows.

Is it basically mandatory to skill up in crossbows once in outland? And, if so, how do you recommend I do it? I know how to skill a melee weapon, having done it millions of times with my warrior and shaman, but it seems I could only get 2-3 shots off with the xbow per mob before I'd have to shift to melee. I imagine that would take forever....

First off, read the sticky. Second of all, get a pet.

Seriously, do you have a pet with max ranked growl? You definetely shouldn't be pulling aggro of him THAT soon.

Edit: Assuming you actually have a pet, lol

First off, the information in the sticky on crossbows is mainly that they are rare in Azeroth. So that didn't help.

Second, I have a pet but the lvl 57 ape is gonna kill the mobs I need to get from weapon skill 1 to 2 before I can get any shots off. Is the preferred method to pick some moderate-hp mob 10-20 lvls lower and pepper it while chain-healing the pet?
#5 May 28 2008 at 12:51 PM Rating: Good
No, the accepted method would be picking on any equal level mob. Your pet can solo pretty much anything alone, and you can just stand there autoshooting. And someone that's obviously this "new" at playing a Hunter past 60 needs to read the sticky fully.

Why would you fight a low level mob? You can up your weapon skill with any mob.

Gorillas are kinda low DPS pets. How is it killing your mobs before you get a few shots off?

I think he thought you had to level on beginning mobs in order to get your first few skillups.

Xsarus is correct, this is more a reflection of my familiarity with leveling weapons on melee toons where it makes no sense to stand and pound on an equal-lvl mob from 1-300. This is why I asked the question in the hunter forum, been a long time since I even thought about this toon or playstyle. My mindset is still that I take damage from what I autoattack.

Also, I read the sticky before I posted. It never answered my main question, ie, is it really necessary to go through this weapon skill process or am I fine going to 70 with just bow skill. I am assuming by the collective silence on x-bows that I do need to learn how to use them post-60, so I suppose I go autoshoot a hellboar for a few hours tonight.

You can go all the way to 70 without using/training crossbows. It won't really make much difference. At 70 (or sooner) having bows, crossbows, and guns maxed out increases your options. There may be times when you want the ability to use any one of the three if an upgrade drops for you.

One easy way to level ranged weapon skill pre-70: Outside the portal in Blasted Lands, there are mobs (Servant of Razelikh I believe is the one) that won't die. It gets down to 1% health, but then won't die if you don't use the nearby stones that are part of a quest. There's at least one or two right by the road northwest of the Portal. Sick your pet on it, heal it when needed and just auto-shot away.

Thanks much. I remember that mob in the Blasted Lands; had never thought of him as the perfect weapon skillup.

Well, he isn't...

The perfect mob to skill up anything ranged is Dr Boom in Netherstorm, while for melee you'd go see one of the shamans in SMV.

Not necessarily at your level, but you might want to keep those in mind for later.

I had a hunter who was in the same situation, frankly I am amazed you actually came on here to ask. I just equipped the crossbow and went back to business. Sure it takes a while, but if you pop rapid fire whenever it's up, it speeds the process along. Until you get to around 40pts from your current max you should be getting a skillup from every shot, and 200+ shots does not take that long. Just don't go nuts trying to solo elites or too many mobs.
#14 May 28 2008 at 10:02 PM Rating: Excellent
Step 1: Learn Crossbow.

Step 2: Get Ironstar Repeater

Step 3: Buy some of these.

Step 4: Travel to Blasted Lands

Step 5: Find this mob.

Step 6: Send pet, equip crossbow and ammo, hit autoshot.

Step 7: AFK (an hour should get you to 330+).

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but between autoshots I spam rank 1 Serpent Sting. Levels it up at nearly double the speed.

Hey, I have something moderately useful to contribute, for once.

Maybe.

BANGDEAD PRESENTS:
A cheap way of levelling ranged skill for lower levelled characters:

Get cheap ammo

Set Rank 1 serpent sting

Find a Critter

Blast the critter with R1 serpent sting. It'll take off running, but never attack you, since it's critter.

SS doesn't do it's first tic until after 5 seconds or so, and it overwrites itself if you reapply it. So, as long as you hit that critter with another serpent sting before the first poison tics, the poison will NEVER tick, and the critter will stay alive forever, and you can keep stinging it forever.

Ironically, if you STOP shooting it, it will die.

Serpent sting cools down with the GCD, so it's a nice fast shot.

The downside is you have to chase the critter around, (Cheetah helps) and you will look very silly doing this. On the positive said it confuses the HELL out of new players when you blast a L1 critter with a high powered weapon 640 times and it just... won't... die... (If the ask, patiently explain you are trying to tame it. After 2.4 that's how it works.)

Also occasionally the critter will run too far and will Evade bug, but you can just find another one, or follow it back and start again.

So there you have it.. It's not elegant. But it's sort of entertaining and a good way to jump-start ranged skill if you don't have access to immunity mobs.

Hell no! Our GM has threatened us with spending a year in Deadmines rather than raiding if we don't stop killing the squirrels in Magister's Terrace as we walk by...

Then again, could just tell him to move along since what I'd actually be doing would be keeping the squirrel alive - as long as he doesn't interrupt.

And somewhat hazardous to your health unless you play on a PvEffortless server.

you need to let your pet build up some agro first. try letting the pet knock the mob down 10 or 20% first, or even 25%. I'm guessing you just send pet and start shooting right away. once your pet has established some agro, you can unload on a mob. thats my too scents.

That depends how high your starting skill is. If your skill is so low you'll miss for a while, you can start off shooting right away.
#23 Jun 02 2008 at 12:00 PM Rating: Good
I used the servant in the cave gets you to 340 easy. At 340 it's drops off it seems can spam shot's for a while without a single point.
But by that time doing your dailies should get it capped easy.

I personally dont use a crossbow or a bow because i am a dwarf so i stick with guns. There are alot of QR that include crossbows but u can fin better bows in OL then those crossbows. So instead of going through all the trouble of upgrading from a bow to a crossbow when u can find a better bow. So imo just stick with either a bow ,crossbow or a gun until u reach lvl cap.

I found the easiest way to do it without having to run around so much was to just use your pet in passive. Once you set it to passive and select your target, just click growl. As soon as your pet walks up and growls the mob, click passive again and your pet will just stand there and take hits. Now all you have to do is fire your weapon and sometimes hit Mend Pet. Once you actually start doing some damage and pull the mob off your pet, just click growl/passive again and go back to your shooting. It won't take you long at all to get at least high enough that you hit most of the time and do decent enough damage to do some quests with your Crossbow, and by the time you finish a quest or two (maybe three if your starting from 1 at level 58) your Xbow skill should be to the point your just fine.

You'll need to throw that policy overboard at endgame anyway.
You just use the best weapon you can get, wether that's a bow, gun or crossbow.

That is, if you want to become succesful at whatever you plan to do at endgame.
