In another thread, somebody asked a really dumb question about "the best gear he can get" and I got all smartass and linked a set of Kara starter gear for him to shoot for.

People obviously agreed with most of the list since the post was rated up and nobody has made any comments refuting any of my gear selections.

Even though my mage is only level 18, I was curious how a mage with that gear list would perform, so I went to the Warcrafter sandbox and decked him out. I wasn't entirely sure how to gem so I went with something like spell dmg in red gem slots and spell dmg/crit in yellow gem slots and I think spell damage in blue gem slots.

When I hit the "build stats" button I was floored by a couple of things. The amount of spell damage was amazing. Over 900 fire spell damage in pre-Kara gear seemed awesome to me. The gear set also had about 1.2% chance to miss on bosses and about 21% school-independent crit%, which both seemed more than enough to start Kara.

Then I looked at HP and Mana. Now I realize that a mage needs even less HP than say, a rogue or enhancement shaman, but total Mana is fairly important I would suspect.

The set of gear I built had a total of 6500 HP and 7400 mana unbuffed, and that seemed a LOT low to me. I have done heroics on some of my 70s with mages in mostly blue gear who were pushing 10k mana (or at least over 9k with no problems). Other than the obvious "because it has low int totals", why does this gear set have so little mana, and will it be a problem for mages who strive to attain it to start Kara?

unbuffed those are fairly normal stats for just starting kara. I would generally shoot for closer to 7000hp, which you can get fairly easily through enchants on the legs/chest/etc. The mages you saw in blues were probably arcane mages or stacking int as they get a large bonus from the later talents in arcane to get quite a bit of intellect/mana.

Int isn't nearly as important as +dmg, hit or crit in reasonably long fights.

Kara gear isn't as cracked up as some people say. Since 2.4 it has gotten even worse. In my raid gear, I don't wear on single item from a raid instance (I am just starting out SSC/TK in progression). I still have 1105 fire spell dmg, 152 spell hit (cap for Draenei) and 31% crit (with molten armor).

I was talking about pre-Kara gear.

I'm not sure about the Int, but that health sounds like about what I had when I was first entering Kara. The thing about that place is that there are very few fights where you really need any kind of stam(Shade and Illhoof are the two I used to wear stam sets for).

Stamina requirements become greater over time... the further along in raid content you are, the more you need. However, the gear also scales a fair bit as you get higher and higher up. I can almost hit 11k health buffed(Gift, PW:F, Kings) just by switching out one trinket now.

Int also scales, but I really can't remember what I had during Kara.

well as i am basically pre-kara (only ran it once) and mostly in blues with a few grapes i picked up from some PvP and a lucky drop or two.

those are about my stats with only +500 to damage. so depending on how lucky you were on instance runs getting to 70 the quest rewards SUCK *** for a mage. most of the rewards are +healing with a LITTLE +damage same can be said of instance drops too for that matter. my gloves are kara gloves and are FAR better for a priest then for a mage. only reason i got them was the priests all had better and none of the other nukers wanted them. they still were an upgrade for my pathetic greens i had at the time.

i can say i can run, what few i have run, heroics with little problems and my solo ability is very good so i am happy for now knowing that better gear will pan out someday to come.
