Hello Mages-

Just a quick question for you leveling mages or the seasoned 70 mages.

I've wondered if it is CRUCIAL for a leveling mage to have the best of gears to level to at least 58.

What i'm trying to figure out is, should I be constantly checking the armory for upgrades to my current gear or should i just pick up quest rewards and lucky blues from dungeons then move on?

Will my survivability and leveling speed greatly improve with the best of the best gear?

Im Frosty BTW, started as fire up to 30.

My Armory for little frosty

Also, my armory to my BM Hunter that i have this place to thank for all the guides and info...Big Beenk here

Thanks

You don't need the best of gear to level with.

My goal is to try and upgrade any piece that is 8 levels out of date for a green and 10 levels out of date for a blue.

No, you do not need the best of the best gear. Heck, you don't need best of the best gear until you hit 70.

But......it always helps.

However - I would not advise grinding for drops. That is a waste of time. Treat drops as a "nice to have, but not necessary".

What I did was look up quest rewards in a certain zone (I found thottbot's search easier for this). If there was one I wanted, then I went to that zone to level. If not, then I didn't go to that zone. Easy as that.

I just got my mage to 32 and was wondering the same thing. Having a rogue as a main, I thought about it. And here is my assumption. Your ability to kill mobs is based on level, since intel / spirit / stam don't increase your "spell power". Being a mage, most mobs should never, or rarely touch you. So as long as you have a decent amount of intel, I would think gear wouldn't be so important at lower levels. Now at higher lvls you get diff stats..like spell hit/crit/ bonus dmg etc...

I'm just going to use what gear comes by, and buy AH stuff if something is way outta date..

One thing I learned from my first toon, don't worry about having the best gear until 70, as you will replace it soon.

Now all ppl w/ mages as mains or w/ more experience will probably correct me :)

I've leveled all of my toons in crap i pulled out of the Salvation Army bins in Org...it won't break your leveling to be in **** gear, but it certainly doesn't hurt. I just wouldn't recommend going out of your way to get items because most likely you'll replace them in less time than it would take you to farm them...

I've knew a guy that spent two weeks farming for a drop in ZF and in the time it took for him to get it I went from being the same level as him to being in outlands...though I do have too much time on my hands and I play wayyy too much...but that's beside the point...

This is partially true. Your ability to kill mobs is based on level and gear. At lvl 40, I had 900 health, about 4,000 mana, and around +80 spell damage. I never died. All my gear was +intel, and + spell damage.

Intel lets you kill more mobs with less down time

Spell damage lets you kill them faster

All other stats are.....meh at that level.

There aren't really any AoE bosses to worry about (if you are even running instances), so Stamina is not a priority. Solo grinding - you shouldn't be getting touched anyway.

Edited for clarity
