So I’m leveling up my baby mage, now level 16. I originally tried to go frost because people told me it gave you more control and survivability while leveling. Being the smart person I like to think I am, I figured more survivability would be a good thing, especially seeing as I have never played a mage before.

So I’m in the Barrens doing the Centaur Bracers quest and constantly getting owned by the patrols with one of the archers and one of the Stormers. I could pump out frostbolts half decently, even with arrows and lightning bolts hitting me, but I just couldn’t kill both mobs fast enough.

I decided I had had enough and went and respecced fire with 5/5 Imp Fireball and 2/2 Flame Throwing.

JESUS do I see a difference.

Any mob within 2 levels of me is crispy before they get within 15 yards of me. Fireball, Fireball, Fireball, Fire Blast and I have a dead goblin, pirate, lion or whatever waiting to be looted. And when I get those adds I can usually throw out a Fire Blast and Frost Nova and get enough range to throw out Fireballs with no problem.

God am I loving this. With Flame Throwing I start so far away from the mob I can barely see my fireball by the time it hits and I’ve usually got another one well on the way by the time the first one gets there.

I can’t wait to get to level 20 and get Pyroblast so I can open with that and really put a hurting on the mob.

Just out of curiosity - did you try using Polymorph? There should be no need to "Kill the mobs fast enough". Sheep one, destroy the other. Then, destroy the sheep.

Although - glad to hear you are enjoying fire. It is fun :) And you are going to LOVE Pyro!!!! It changes everything.

lol... don't worry. I was new to WoW when I started my mage... it took me till lvl 20 to figure out that 1) the spells didn't automatically update when you trained. 2) You aren't *supposed* to use your staff to kill things. 3) Mage aren't supposed to die 10 times to get 1 quest done. 4) That 'little red man' in the corner means your gear is busted.... red = not good.

It used to be that way, but spells do automatically update when you train them now. It used to be that was only for non-mana-using abilities, but it's all-inclusive now.

Also for the double-mob pull, I start a Pyroblast on one target, and while it's casting, I switch targets and ready my finger. As soon as the Pyroblast is launched, I immediately sheep the other and turn back to unload on the first.

Time for a bigger monitor, IMO. Smiley: wink

Glad to see you're not one of those Frost commies (Russia is cold -> Russia was communist for a bit = all frost mages are commies, true story).

Welcome to the flock, bad pun fully intended.

The Cheka was the Russian secret police. This music is appropriate for Frost Mage grinding.

I had to give this a bump, as The Fat of the Land is a great CD.

I have been arcane for quite a while, but I still miss the range that Flame Throwing provided. If it wasn't for the increasing fire resistence encountered in the late game, I probably would still be fire.

...which late game are you talking about? The days of BWL are over...

Perhaps, but are two bosses enough to merit staying out of the spec?

No, but it was all I could think of.

Actually, it was the trouble I was having with the fiery demons and fire elementals that caused me to sign off on fire. If I happened to get unwanted attention from more than I was ready for, they would tear me up.

As my guild is too small to even do Kara (though we are getting closer), raiding never played a factor in the decision.

I can see that. Hell, I'm overgeared and I never bother doing the dailies out at the Throne of Kil'jaeden because I don't like bothering with those fire elementals.
