Feral Druids Viable in High End Raids?Follow

#1 May 27 2008 at 7:19 AM Rating: Decent
Been talking with some of my guildies that feel past KZ a Feral DPS doesnt scale enough DPS to justify a slot over other melee dps. IS a Feral truely viable past KZ? or is the only way to go is a respec to Tank,Boomkin or Resto?

If you're willing to innervate, battle rez, switch bear or a quick OT on ocassion, etc. yes you'd have a spot in a raid run by knowledgeable and open-minded people.

You won't equal a rogue's damage. But it's rarely about pure DPS in my experience, it's also the players' discipline and skill and group balance.

I have heard this before also, but I am not far enough in end game to say YES or NO for sure.

I've dpsed in cat form up to mount hyjal and our dps doesn't scale well at all. While the rogues are way past 1k dps, I'm trying to pick up my 850 dps butt. I'm still welcome in every raid because of Imp leader of the pack, Brez, innervate, and sometimes I have to bust out a tranquility for my dps group, which normally consists of Myself, two rogues, dps warrior, and a enhance shammy. Its the shammy and I who get those rogues way up in the dps charts lol.

Whichever you choose i would ditch the armor enchants you have.

Armor enchants are added on top of everything else after bear armor mod.

15 agi > 240 armor enchant for your hands and the 12 agi > 120 armor for cloak.

No, Cat DPS on it's own isn't a good reson to bring a feral druid. Raid Leaders bring a feral druid for one of 2 things; to OT, or to give a melee/Hunter group +5% crit.

As for your gear:

RED is your meta-friend. If you really want the extra 8% run speed, get a Cat's Grace (DPS boots) or Boar's Speed (Tanking boots) enchant.

Don't gem for AP... ever. For two reasons. First, the equivalent Str gem gives just as much AP, but is affected by Blessing of Kings. Str is worth 2.2 AP in some 5-mans, most 10-mans, and almost every 25-man. Second, Agi is better than strength for DPS at pretty much every realistic value for crit % and AP. There's a chart on the Druid wiki. http://druid.wikispaces.com/ToskksDPSGearMethod

On the same line, don't gem for crit rating. Agi gives almost the same % crit, and gives AP at the same time. If you need yellow gems for your meta (RED requires 2 of each), +4 Hit/+4 Agi. Only socket for crit if you're already hit-capped and need a yellow gem for your RED.

Start building seperate DPS and tanking sets. There are some pieces you can enchant/gem for both DPS and tanking without suffering too much, but most slots you have to choose between good DPS and good tanking. (Off hand, some things good for Cats and Bears are: +6 stats to chest, +15 agi to gloves, Agi gems, 2 Agi/Stam gems for RED)

My guild is in TK & SSC at the moment. I am the main OT in the guild, but have been spreading the duties to other ferals in the guild as the gear is catching up to mine. When DPS'ing I am always in the top 10 and often in the top 5. On several fights now, I have topped 1k DPS (on Shade of Aran the other night I hit 1200dps)

The mages & locks are starting to pull ahead of me now but I don't think our rogues are very good as they have yet to beat me. We have just got a new rogue recruit who is doing very good DPS compared to his gear, and I expect him to pass me soon as well.

I used to think that we would fall behind in SSC & TK, but so far, I am keeping up (mostly). I think this is due to the new badge gear they have given us. I don't expect this to continue into the T6 raids, but then we are there for our support & OT'ing not our DPS. As long as our DPS is respectable, there will always be a spot for us.

Feral holds its own until T6 where scaling becomes an issue and you need to rely more on your utility and offtanking ability to justify your spot instead of being solid dps. Before then though, feral is well suited for raiding as either tank or dps.

My guild is up to mother shahraz in BT and I'm second feral off tank in the guild, so i usually dps on bosses where 3 tanks aren't needed.

In the fights where I'm only dps'ing i usually end up at least as nr 6 on the damage meter, and sometimes even higher. As a pure dps spot other might be better, but with the extra stuff a druid brings I'm always guaranteed a spot in the raid even if we are full on tanks/off tanks.

My highest dps so far was 2100 dps on winterchill in mount hyjall. My standard dps with just a food buff and normal raid buffs is about 1k. Try to get into a group with beastmaster hunter and an enhancement shaman using grace of air totem. Your dps will skyrocket

Yes.

1) Kitty druids can put out a good amount of dps, sure we're not going to overtake a equally geared and played pure dps class if the groups are set up right, but we can more than hold our own.

2) Our other abilities make us great for High end raids. ILotP (espescially with Idol of the Raven Godess equipped)..BR's..Mangle debuff..and Feral FF. Not to mention that even in full dps gear we're better suited to tank a mob than another dps class.

If you read through the elitistjerks megathread you can actually see where people have worked out how our abilities increase the raids dps to more than compensate for the difference between a druids dps vs. a pure dps.

As far as spec's go...there are several spec builds along the lines of 47/14 that are optimal for both tanking and dps.

However...if there is already a feral druid tank in the raid party who switches to dps when not needed...then the contribution of another dps feral druid isn't as great unless they are over-geared compared to the other pure dps classes, or needed in fights that favor melee dps such as VR
