Pally AoE - No shield spikeFollow

#1 May 27 2008 at 4:53 AM Rating: Decent
I have managed to level my pally to 30, and hope to start AoE in the next few levels.
The problem I have is I can't get hold of a shield spike for love nor money.
I have spent a long time shouting in /1, /2, /y and /s but no one is interested, even offering a stupid amount of gold (like 100).

What's the likely hood of being able to a) Level blacksmithing so I can make my own and b) getting a shield spike recipe to drop?

The problem with trying to farm a shield spike formula is that they're all random world drops or BoP rep rewards. I would keep your eyes open for the formula on the AH first, and if you find it, then take up blacksmithing.

High end blacksmiths that have been playing for a long time should all be able to make Felsteel Shield Spikes, since the pattern is a hellfire Exalted rep reward. The mats for those spikes are pretty expensive, though.

The good news is that Blizzard removed the blacksmithing requirement to attach the spike to a shield, so you can just buy one and attach it yourself.

Alla's pricing data on these plans (particularly for mithril/thorium spikes) don't come close to reflecting actual prices on my server. People have often remarked that for whatever reason the uncommon thorium plans are seen far less than the rare mithril plans. I seldom see the mithril plans on the AH for less than 50G, and 150G isn't unheard of. I've never seen the thorium spike plans for sale on our AH.

Compounding your problem is the fact that these plans only provide skillups for a relatively narrow window, that a blacksmith has probably already passed if he were to find one of these plans in the wild.

As Ialaman noted, you can aim for the Felsteel Shield Spike. Ironically, it's the one shield spike that most blacksmiths are able to craft. If you have 100G to spend on a spike though, this spike is eminently doable: the mats are four felsteel bars, four primal fire, and four primal earth. Depending on your server's prices, that might leave a little room for a tip and still be within your budget.

If mithril or thorium plans are available to you on the AH, you might consider buying them and then trading them to a blacksmith friend who's willing to craft them for you on the spot. I'd definitely try that approach before you power-level blacksmithing on your own from scratch.

I wish I was on your realm. I'd so hook you up for 100g lol.

This is a good reminder for us who've totally forgotten about low level craft items. Once in a while we should throw up some weapon chains, shield spikes etc now that everyone else is busy farming motes and raiding.

1 primal fire goes for about 30g on my server . . . primal earths go for 10g

if i wanted to make one for me, i'd be looking at 200g for a spike. . .

I'm sorry Ruen, I forgot to add the "YMMV" caveat.

My server- felsteel bar runs about 8G each, primal fire a little over 15g, and primal earth seldom if ever breaks 4g each.

Meh, that would still come out to be ~108G even for a conscientious shopper. I guess I'd fail that WoW game show after all (hopefully there some lovely parting gifts).

To the OP:

a) don't
b) very small

What I do is not using /1, /2 or whatsoever, but finding high level warriors/paladins in mayor cities, preferably the ones that are aimlessly running around with lots of supergear, and asking them directly if they are a blacksmith. If the answer is "yes", ask them if they can craft the X shield spike and you will be surprised how fast you will find someone who can.

The thorium shield spike is my favorite (relatively very cheap spike, but very very VERY rare plans), hard to get, so when you find someone who CAN craft them, be sure to have 5x the mats to have him craft 5 spikes so that you can use them on future shield upgrades too.

Asking people directly is hardly ever ignored, asking through /1, /2 etc almost always is... Just a tip!
