Don't get the title wrong, though. I know how to heal someone. You select the friendly target and press the desired spell's button.

What I'm interested in learning is what spells to use, when to use them and how. My Priest has been Shadow spec'd almost all her life, but level 70 is drawing near and my ultimate desire is to make her a Disc/Holy Priest for PvP. Or a Holy/Disc Priest for PvE. I haven't quite figured it out yet.

It should be noted that I don't raid.

As it is now, I've only healed a bit during the 64 levels I've played. I remember healing The Deadmines back when we were writing Patch 1.6 or so. Yeah, she's that old. In fact, she's the second character I created, I think it was about two weeks into the game launch.

Anyway, things change and Outland instances require a bit more attention than healing an overgeared group through Uldaman. I've only backup healed Outland instances so far, but it went okay, I guess. I'm just used to slapping HoT spells on the tank and never run out of mana due to crazysick mp5 my Druid has. Restokins are nice. But this is a Priest. How do you heal as a Priest? I guess you could say I've tried both ends of the spectrum. I've healed on my Paladin which was a very boring Flash of Light spam frenzy. I've healed on my Druid which was an interesting mix of HoT "rolling" and inefficient direct healing. I take it the Priest is somewhere inbetween?

As a Priest, how do you heal in PvP and 5-man PvE (heroic and normal)?

I tried looking over the first page, but nothing seemed to catch my interest. If I missed some golden nugget, please slap me and point me in the general direction. Thanks.

Heroics hmmm, PoM, Renew straight off (PoM should take care of any early threat issues from the renew) start cancel casting Greater Heal. Renew kept up at all times, PoM and refresh renew if I need to switch targets briefly. DPS get nothing more than renew in heroics, take more time out you lose your tank - ahem *whistles*. I'll time my opening PoM for 4-5 seconds before the pull so it's off CD on the first hit or so.

Normal, well when I first started doing level 70 normals I had this tendency to heal everyone and couldn't keep it up, now that's not an issue. So in normal PoM, renew, DpS get healed up (unless they're constantly pulling agro and giving me issues) and I don't usually bother cancel casting Greater Heal plus you can downrank if you wish which usually isn't such a good idea in heroics. I'm much more of a reactive healer here, so I'll only cancel cast if I know the boss is major damage dealer or I have an uber-paladin tanking who feels it necessary to take on whole rooms at once Smiley: lol

I'm not gonna comment on PvP healing really cos (I hate it and I'm crap) when I do it although I have lovely raid UI's with range check I just normally heal whatever's in front of me with lots of PoM's and renews oh and I musn't forget, if you're healing in BG's dispel is the key.

Edit No.54: As for arena, I have no clue.

I am in pretty much the same boat as Maz, my Priest is Shadow spec, but at a much lower level (low 50s). When I want to do an instance I am usually asked to heal, so I make sure I am over-leveled for the instance, for the larger mana pool and possibly higher ranks of healing spells.

I don't understand what "cancel casting" is. Could someone explain the concept?
If I had to guess, I would guess that it is when you start the cast, but then cancel it before it finishes casting (for some reason) ??? Is it in case the tank takes a huge hit, or something?

Exactly, cast it until you got about .5 sec left, then hit esc or use stopcasting macro.

Cancel casting helps your mana efficiency on long fights where you know it may be an issue. You start casting your big heals and with ~0.5 seconds left on the cast you cancel it if the tank doesn't need the heal, immediately starting a new one. With this method you can regen some mana if you get enough time before the tank needs a heal all while constantly having a heal on the way in case a hit does land.

I really never had to worry about this until heroics and raiding, but once I started using it with Clique and /stopcancel built into my healing macros it made life a lot easier.

In terms of healing as a priest, it's been a long time since I've done that! Resto shaman ftw ;) In any case, as already said keep a PoM and renew on the tank at all times, using greater heals to keep them topped off. I generally only heal dps when I know the tank isn't go to die (in other words, I rarely heal dps in heroics unless it's splash damage they can't avoid). Don't forget Binding Heal, it's awesome when you need to heal someone else as well as yourself!

Solid advice above. I'm a pve priest, so that's all I'll talk about.

PoM is your opener because it gives threat to the tank, rather than you. As stated, you cast it a bit before the start of the fight, then after the first hit and it bounces off, you can throw another if possible. As a priest, you need to watch your agro.

Renew should follow and stays up on the tank the entire fight. It is your heal of choice for other party members taking damage.

I like to send the tank PoM each time it cools down, cycling PoM and Renew on him to keep both active. I can keep that up indefinitely. Other heals (flash or greater) will go into the rotation as needed.

The tank doesn't get a PW:sheild. The only time he should is if without it he will be dead. For the tank, it's an emergency spell only.

Know who your clothies are. It's ok to throw PW:Sheild along with the renew on a mage doing arcane blast in the middle of a group of mobs. PW:Sheild also helps to avoid interruption of spell casting. On some fights where a warlock may be the focus of multiple imps, a PW:Sheld may allow him to continue casting with less interruption. It's a tool that shouldn't be overused, but should be used wisely.

We have AOE heals. Be ready with Prayer of Healing if your group takes AOE damage. Some who spec deep enough into Holy also have Circle of Healing available.

If you are taking damage, you have binding heal. You can continue to heal your target, and get yourself out of trouble.

Dispel magic and disease should be easily accessable.

You should use a focus macro for Shackle Undead, or an addon like Control Freak. Be ready for those shackles to break early. Fade and reshackle without needing to retarget the mob. I bind my fade to the "+" key on my numeric keypad, and the shackle to the "-". I can hit them fast. Delay here will get you dead.

Check out other threads on priestly healing addons like healbot, grid, and decursive. Find the ones that you like.

We are a versatile and fun class.

I haven't done the math on it, but is there a heal that is more mana-efficient than others (minor heals, lower ranks, etc)?

We don't need to spam hundreds of little heals like Paladins do we?

Most of the time it is accepted that your spam tank heal should be greater heal rank 2-4 (depends on what your +heal is and the level of content you're healing)
I usually keep GH3 and GH7 on my bars when healing. I don't ever downrank flash heal, as its an emergency thing and I like it to do as much heal per second as possible.

Also, something that helps healing a lot is the appropriate use of macros or a clickcasting mod (clique was mentioned above). I prefer macros myself and have them set up in the following way

#showtooltip
/stopcasting
/cast [target=mouseover,exists,nodead] Greater Heal(Rank 7)

The syntax may be a little off, I'm rewriting it from memory, but there are plenty of examples of macros like this on the web. The advantage of this sort of macro is that you can simply hover your mouse over someone's unitframe and hit a button to heal them. In addition to this, if you are healing a tank at the time, and want to cancel the cast because they are on full hp, you can just hit the button again to cancel the heal, and begin the cast again.

Cancel-casting is a technique that pays off for Priests more than for any other healer because Priests have ways of keeping out of the 5-second rule while still healing (Inner Focus, Holy Concentration procs) and have several talents that reward stacking Spirit. When Holy Concentration procs, you cast your next Greater Heal for free, so you can land a huge heal and not have to worry about the tank too much for a time. After that, you can hit Inner Focus, so when you do have to heal the tank, that heal's free too. By cancel-casting the Inner Focus heal and the next, non-free heal you cast, you can stretch your time out of the five-second rule and bank a great deal of mana. If at the same time you trigger spirit-boosting trinkets and the like, the effect is nearly as dramatic as Innervate.

But if you're not raiding, chances are you won't be in any fights long enough to really see the benefits of cancel-casting. I've never been in a heroic fight where I couldn't keep healing just by using a well-timed shadowfiend and perhaps a mana potion. Your challenge in heroics will simply be learning to choose the right tool from the enormous Priest toolbox for each fight.

Prayer of Mending is a no-brainer. You will cast it on your tank every ten seconds. Renew is another fire-and-forget heal that you should keep ticking on your tank. It's also good for topping off DPS who take a little splash damage, life-tapping locks and the like. You can even use downranked Renew for your DPS to save a little mana.

You should have max rank and a downranked Greater Heal on your bar. This is your most efficient single-target direct heal thanks to casting coefficients and Holy talents, and of course max rank will be overkill at most times. If you're not casting another heal, you should be cancel-casting this on your tank.

Don't bother switching targets when you take damage. Just start casting Binding Heal. It's fast, low threat and insanely efficient. You can keep yourself alive through any AOE or splash just by spamming this, and it's awesome on fights where you can expect to pull aggro but not to get two-shotted, such as the PVP-style fight in Magister's Terrace or any boss with lots of adds, like the Underbog's Black Stalker..

Prayer of Healing is simply amazing when the whole party is taking damage. I don't know how the heck a Paladin heals through the Infernals' meteors at the end of the Arctraz, but Priests have it easy. When you see the big rock coming down, start casting PoH. Mischief managed.

Power Word: Shield is great for proactive damage prevention. Cast it before a pull on the DPS you expect to pull aggro, such as the AOE mage or warlock to help keep them up and to prevent spell interruption, or on your rogue to give him a better chance of surviving to Vanish if the Sap goes wrong, or on CC Succubi to keep them from being interrupted by splash damage, which usually leads to a short Seduce and a dead demon. It's also the oh-crap move you can pull when someone is likely to die in less than 1.5 seconds.

In all other oh-crap situations, there's Flash Heal. Rightly scorned for its inefficiency, this spell is nevertheless what you will turn to when the tank's health is critical. Don't chain-cast it, however: get back to Greater Heal as soon as you can.

Circle of Healing is amazing in high-end raiding, but pre-raid gear doesn't really support it and I haven't found a fight in Heroics that called for it. Even fights where you need a lot of mobility and there's a lot of splash damage--the Astromancer in Mechanaar for example--are easy enough with a mix of instants (PoM, Renew, PW:S) and PoH, and your peeps tend to get so scattered that CoH might not cover them all.

I've never used Lightwell or Holy Nova, so I can't reference them. They seem to be the suck.

Finally, don't forget your bandages! When you're conserving mana and stretching your time in the 5-second rule, nothing like getting a few bandage tics on your DPS or yourself.

In PVP, your role as a discipline priest is actually that of an offensive/healer hybrid. You'll master the art of doing the minimum healing necessary while aggressively dispelling the enemy and debuffs that are keeping your teammates out of the fight, looking for an opportunity to mana burn enemies, and using your fear to maximum effect. The time to cast Greater Heal is a luxury you won't have; you'll be relying on Renew, Prayer of Mending, Pain Suppression and Binding Heal, plus Power Word: Shield when appropriate (Reflective Shield makes it often appropriate!) and Flash Heal on rare occasions. I recommend a Mutilate rogue partner for 2s, a Frost Mage and a Shadowstep Rogue for 3s, and any comp with a main healer who is not you for 5s.

Thanks.
Fantastic info. This thread delivers!
Some of the details for Holy-spec-only heals won't apply to me til later (because I won't be required to go Holy until at least the late 60s), but great advice.

Great thread!

I am in the same boat as the OP; level'd shadow and just recently started healing in 5-mans. This is great info. and reinforces what i've been learning so far (lvl 66 atm). I'd like to add a question of my own to this: How important is my (holy) spell-crit percentage, for normal runs/heroics/raiding? If this is important then what ratio of crit vs healing bonus should I shoot for?

Thx!

Spell crit is not at all important for a healing Priest in 5-mans. Not that it's bad--you will proc Inspiration on crits, increasing your tank's mitigation, and crits on your downranked Greater Heals will boost your mana efficiency. If an upgrade happens to have some crit, fine. But never trade healing, spirit, MP5 or stamina for spell crit.

I've heard people say that spell crit can be a boon to Circle of Healing priests in T5 content and beyond, but I don't consider the sources very reliable.
