Pet Loyalty FactorsFollow

can someone please explain the pet leveling factors for a level 70 player that attains a lower level pet (say 68 or 69)? I have read and heard that pet loyalty is based on hunters getting XP. So if you are a level 70 and not accruing any xps at this point does the pet still acquire loyalty points, which i imagine they do, but would like verification and if possible any formulative numbers anyone might know of. I recently trained a secondary level 69 scorpid and it seems as tho hes not moving...his exp. bar is moving but his loyalty factor seems to be questionable. thank you for you help.

Loyalty goes up even if you're 70. It just takes a LOT longer. I don't have any number crunching stuff to show you exactly how long it takes, but it does take longer.

I recently tamed a Rip-Blade Ravager, and it reached Best Friend before it gained a single level. I took it on SSO dailies, BG PvP (nice to not have to be feeding it every 5 minutes there), Heroic runs, and a single Kara run which only made it through Maiden.

It's still at 69th level, I can't say that this experience really enlightened me as to the mechanics behind Pet leveling. I don't think the PvP did anything at all for it with regards to Loyalty and it's EXP bar never moved from BGs, at least so much as I could discern.

When you first tame your pet, make sure you have plenty of food that the pet will eat. You'll end up feeding him a lot! This will bring loyalty up (as far as his mood is concerned).

Check out Petopia....it has the latest information on pets, including type, leveling, talents, etc.

A pet that is lower level than you will level with anything that yields experience. PVP is a non experience giving event, so they won't level, just as your character won't level.

If you're level 70, you're new pet will take longer to level, but they will level. Try and tame something that is as close to your current level as possible.

You'll want to tame different animals to learn their skills. You'll get a message in your chat window saying "You have learned blah blah blah". Then you can dismiss you're temporary pet, and teach the new skill to your favorite, if he is capable of learning it. Certain critters can only learn certain skills. Again, refer to Petopia.

One pet at 60 that will teach three skills are the Worgs near Halcyon in BRD.

Hope this helps. =D

It is 5% of the hunters xp for the next level (even the theoretical xp for 71) plus a minimum of 30 minutes (iirc).

From WoWWiki.

To get to rank .. XP Gain required Time required
Rank 2 (Unruly) 5% of hunter's xp at current level 0 minutes
Rank 3 (Submissive) 5% of hunter's xp at current level 30 minutes
Rank 4 (Dependable) 5% of hunter's xp at current level 45 minutes
Rank 5 (Faithful) 5% of hunter's xp at current level 60 minutes
Rank 6 (Best Friend) 5% of hunter's xp at current level 90 minutes

So, without pulling a single number from anywhere, I can say with a decent amount of accuracy that two runs through any level 70 instance or raid will bring that pet to heel. Instance running have been my answer to almost anything pet related since pre-tbc now, and it's served me well...

OMG! Not surprising then...

I took my hunter out of retirement yesterday. I want to make my rogue yet another leatherworker, and seeing how leather prices are totally insane on my server now, I decided that I needed a skinner to make it possible. Mining always interfered with my tracking, and jewelcrafting works well enough without mining yourself, so the hunter had to relearn.

To give this whole hunter thing somewhat of a fresh start, I went and tamed one of the druids dire ravens in BEM. I then went up to Netherstorm to gather my (almost) daily 20 Zaxxis insignias, and while doing so, the bird's loyalty went up to 2.

Then came the skinning training, and since then... nothing. All the way from 1 to 285, and no more loyalty gain. 5+ hours of grinding Winterspring yetis then - nothing. Well, almost nothing since intervals between feeding have become shorter and shorter, to the point that the bird is now stabled since it sucks having to feed all the time when the meat drops are too low in level.

This entire time in my career as a hunter I was under the impression that loyalty was just a matter of time ONLY. Thinking about it now, how could I assume anything different being that you usually only kill mobs that either give or would give xp?

Guess I might as well get the bird out of the stable again then and deal with his appetite for the few more hours of low-level skinning I need before I can go straight to Nagrand to start the Knothide grind. After all, my skinning skill went up to like 373 on just the yetis.

Wish I had read this thread earlier...

On another note, screech and dive are awesome. It's actually big fun to round up 3 yetis and multi-shot them without drawing aggro most of the time - despite hitting them hard. Just have to turn off the sound or else I'd go nuts. Think I found a new permanent farming pet.
