my winterwolf reached level 25 yesterday, and since then its been getting hungry every 3 minutes. why is this happening so often? does it actually have anything to do with the level?

As your pet levels you will need to feed it higher level food to keep it happy.

Yes, you can see in the combat log how much happyness is being achieved per tick when you feed your pet. I believe 35 per tick is the highest and thats pretty much what you want to go with until they are completely happy.

You may also notice that pets get hungry pretty quickly the more you battle especially, when trying to build thier loyalty level up to "best friend".

Even at best friend it seems like they become unhappy in no time. Really annoying when your just running around shat/AH and your pet keeps asking to be fed.

Hunters do have a dismiss command. If you are running around Shat or at the AH, just dismiss your pet. When you call him back, he will be at the same lvl of happiness.
It all has to do with lvl of food. The closer your food level is to your pets lvl, the longer he will stay happy. Also, if you are killing things your level that drop meat, feed it to your pet. He will stay happy.
Bottom line, if i was getting beat on by some big guy, and my best friend was standing back out of harms way, I would be pretty unhappy with that arrangement too. If feeding your pet really bothers you, create a warlock.

Actually, Dismiss Pet reduces its happiness by 50.

Which is almost nothing compared to a lengthy AH/Crafting/idling session in Shatt/UC/IF/SW/Org and so on. So still good advice. I still keep my Humar out next to me though, since he is the best looking pet in the game, heh.

If you know you are going to be cruising the AH, or just around town for a while, there is an easy way to get your pet out of sight, without taking the happiness loss from Dismiss Pet.
Just get the pet to Stay (Ctrl+3 if I remember correctly) at one point and walk away. At a certain distance he will de-spawn, and not return until you Summon Pet back again.
At Ironforge, I just have my companion (whatever I'm using at the time) stay in the bank, and by the time I get to the Auction House he is gone and I don't have to worry about him.

He won't lose any happiness or get any more hungry while he is away.
(or she, depending on your anthropomorphising preference for your pet.)

Pssh, fashion fad...
The real pets are the good old ones.

*goes on about how waiting nine hours in the tree north of Ratchet during a snowstorm, uphill both ways, while the grass was actually greener on the other side of the fence and the kids knew to respect their elders and didn't listen to their devil music and cars weren't little plastic boxes and... (goes on for an hour or so)*

Just get off my lawn damnit!

*grumbles about kids*

I keep my cat out 99.9% of the time and have around 50 Talbuk Steaks in my bags, she will want to eat about every 20-25 mins if I am just tooling around SW or AH. No big deal to me with this, she has saved my @ss lots of times so a steak every now and then is nothing.
