Hello there Shamanfolk,

When is the damage reduction of the Stoneskin Totem applied? Is it before the damage is reduced by armor, or after the damage calculation is finalized? Also does the Stoneskin totem work for Magic damage sources?

It says melee, so I assume it's melee :P

Quite so.

Stonekin's damage reduction is actually applied before armor and other effects. This is the reason why it is not used over strength of earth(although it is on certain occasions), simply because most tanks would rather have the boost to their threat then the very small bonus to durability stoneskin gives them.

If you are looking to give a tanking group some extra boosts drop your agility totem, this totem is actually very good for a tanking group as it will increase their dodge chance by close to 3%(off the top of my head =/). 3% doesnt sound like much, but it can give that boost to midrange tanks to push boss crits or even crushing blows off the table.

The main place I use Stoneskin is where there are a lot of melee mobs in a pull, or if there were adds. Stoneskin works better for many small attacks over few large ones, but frankly, it doesn't work well at all.

If you think of Stoneskin as straight mitigation all on its own, then no, it definitely does not work well and it's almost never worth it. However, pair it with the constant health ticks of Healing Stream on a tank that's blocking everything he isn't dodging or parrying and you can sometimes squeeze some use out of it.

I dunno. I still agree, Raglu, it just does not work well at all. I'd love to see it changed to reduce a set percent of melee damage, but that wouldn't improve it much on trash and would make it way OP on raid bosses.

Thanks a ton for the answers guys. I thought it was calculated after the armor was taken into effect, so I thought it was amazing. Feralas has been showing me that this can't possibly be true, so I thought I would ask and see if I was just doing something wrong.
