So I've looked around a bit, read some stickies, and I think Warlock looks like a really interesting job.
I hate to compare, but I have to because it has a skill-tree too.. but I played Diablo II for many years(before all the problems :/) and I recognized that to be the optimal class, you often had to horde points for specific skills, not spending them all as you level.
This also often required numerous characters.

I'm soon to buy WoW, I was curious as to the above, is it similar in character building?
Also, I have played only one other MMO(FFXI) so I am very unaware how the character creation process works in WoW. Is it similar to D2 in that one char, one class but you can have numerous chars? Do more chars cost money?
I really am interested in Warlock, but I also, at some point, would like to fiddle in a Paladin type. I'll admit I read a comic(LFG) and it really got me to watch Warlock a little more. While it is not the same, it still intrigued me. Plus, I like evil undead violent magics :)

Any advice would be appreciated. I even noticed an expansion is out now, similarly priced to the game. Would it be worth getting the Battle Chest?(reduced price for BOTH game and expansion)

I used to play D2 all the time.

Anyway, WoW isn't really the same. In WoW, I recommend using your talent points, when you decide to where to put them, instead of waiting. More talents = easier to play in the areas you're in, usually.

A single WoW account lets you have, I think, 8 characters per server. With WoW having dozens of servers, you could have... well, a lot of characters, but only characters on the same server, can transfer items/gold between each other. So in a way, it's like D2, where you could have so many characters per account, but with WoW, you'd need to buy another account, if you want more characters on that same server.

In the long run, the battlechest is probably cheaper than buying WoW and the expansion separately.

Blizzard is also currently working on another expansion. I don't think a release date has been announced yet though.

I think I answered all your questions...

10 Characters per Server
• 9 Classes -
Druid/Hunter/Mage/Paladin/Priest/Rogue/Shaman/Warlock/Warrior
• 10 Races -
Alliance : Draenei/Dwarf/Gnome/Human/Night Elf
Horde : Blood Elf/Orc/Tauren/Troll/Undead

Talent Respecs: unlike Diablo 2 where if you miss place a point you haveta start over, Blizzard has introduced Talent(Specialization points) Respecs which for a small amount of gold(that increases exponentially to a max of 50g) you can fix or change your specialization.

Making Characters is Free, and you get to pick Jewellery/Hair/Face/Hair-Beard Color/Tusks/Horns/Facial Markings.

You need the Original WoW to play Burning Crusade, and you need Burning Crusade to play Wrath of the Lich King(when it releases)
