This is about an alt, but I have fun playing her and I want to try to stop being a complete huntard, so please bear with me... :)

I'm working on getting my level 42 hunter toon put back together into something that's playable right now. She was my very first toon, and I had no idea what I was doing...besides weird gear (a lot of Agi, but also tons of Str and Spirit) she's had the same windserpent pet pretty much forever, and I specced her Survival all the way. <.< Fun, but I really wanted to do something different.

I fell in love with the blue crab skin on an Alliance alt in Westfall, so I picked up Claw 6 and then went and tamed one of the blue crabs in Stranglethorn Vale, and I will be sticking with him for a good long time. He seems like he'll make a slightly better tanking pet than my windserpent, with the higher armor, and I think I'll enjoy having a short, out of the way melee pet instead. (He's much bigger than I expected, though!)

The biggest problem I've noticed so far is that he seems so...slow. The only time he moves at a decent pace is when I have Aspect of the Pack on, and I don't really enjoy having him constantly dazed--right now I'm working around this by switching aspects as he gets close enough to attack, but I plan to put the point into Bestial Swiftness as soon as I can.

I am going BM instead of SV now, mostly because I think it'll be awesome to have a big red crab (and I think the talents there will be most useful for him as a little crabtank)...how I have my points right now is this:

I'm going to be taking the points out of Spirit Bond next time I visit the trainer, and picking up Bestial Wrath and The Beast Within as soon as I can (if I hadn't been a bit careless I could have Bestial Wrath now, and believe me I feel a bit dumb about it.) Is there anything else I'm missing, though, that's much more useful than it looks? (Improved Aspect of the Hawk, for instance?) I've looked at cookie-cutter builds and a fair number of threads, but of course I don't have all the points available and I wasn't quite sure what was most important at this level.

Gear-wise, like I said, I'm a bit weird--I can probably get away with doing a few instance runs for drops, but since my Shaman is a leatherworker and I have the patterns, I'm a bit curious about whether Tough Scorpid stuff would be useful, or if the Spirit is completely useless. (If it is, I really have to wonder what class/spec the gear is for.) I think my bow is decent--Baelog's Shortbow--but it's probably time to trade in Loksey's Training Stick for something else? I'm not sure what to look for, though I know that I'd have -fun- if I was dual-wielding again.

Edit--no idea why this posted before I was done. <.< All done now though! Sorry bout that...

Spirit bond sounds better than it is. I suggest not putting any talent points in there. Its a passive heal for you and your pet. However you've got potions, bandages and a nifty pet HoT. So you don't really need spirit bond. All you need is to spend a little extra effort applying those pots and bandages. Spend the points elsewhere on damage dealing abilities. The extra damage will quicken your kills and reduce the amount of healing needed afterwards. So its a win-win.

It sounds like you need some reading. The hunter sticky at the top of the forum will show you the cookie-cutter beastmastery build and answers almost all hunter-related questions with a bit of searching. If you'd like a more thorough breakdown on where to spend those points as you're leveling up, Big Red Kitty has a page on it.

Petopia has a comprehensive list of pets and describes all the mechanics of dealing with them. You'll want to tame multiple pets as you level to learn the skills only they can teach you. Stable whatever pets you've grown fond of and want to keep when going for these others.

Pay attention to the bonus statistics on gear most. Get mail or leather gear. Your pet will be tanking, not you. So the armor rating bonus with mail is largely unimportant. You want gear with a +agility stat most. +intellect and +stamina are next most important. Gear with names like 'of the monkey' and 'of the falcon' fit these categories. You want enchantments with similar stats. When you approach 60, you'll see gear with +attack power and +hit. That's good too.

Like I said, I realized what a mistake it was -after- I'd spent the points. ;) They'll probably be going into Improved Mend Pet instead, now that I've spent a bit of time looking at the options.

I read the sticky, it just didn't answer all my questions. (Though I admit I was mainly looking at the sections on pets and talents, not gear.) That link is very helpful in explaining what to get first, though, so thank you. :)

Shameless Petopia addict here, actually; I'm quite familiar with the site, and it's where I researched where to learn Claw 6--the only learned skill I can teach my new pet--and where to pick up my crabby. I'm not sure I see the point of taming pets to get skills I won't immediately use, though--wouldn't it be best to spend the time questing and go back to pick up the skills when I get a pet that can use them?

Ah, so no Spirit then? It's a shame, but I suppose I'll still be leveling my LW at least by making the stuff, even if I don't use it.

Spirit is useless for a hunter.

Every.. I dunno 8 levels or so try to completely swap out your gear. Don't worry too much about going to the AH every level.

It's great that you have done a lot of research. /cheer

Spirit really isn't useful. That or strength. As said above, AGI, INT, and STA are your bread and butter.

However strange it might sound, Marks is most likely the best soloing build after lvl 40.
Why? because with the way Growl currently works, TSA makes a massive difference in its effectiveness.
(I could go into the theorycrafting but i doubt you'd enjoy that ;) )
It will give your pet a nice and effective growl as wel as having quite nice dps.

And although you'll miss the joys of a bigredcrab i'm sure you can respec someday later :)
(like, lvl 70)
