I just started playing my level 52 mage again and realized that I'm not only rusty but my build probably needs some tweaking. Right now I have points in arcane up to arcane concentation and the rest in fire. And I only play solo pve. I like the idea of the 2/48/11 build because it would give me a little more defensive capability with imp frost nova. I'm just not sure where to put five of the frost points. The two variations I've seen put either 5 points in imp frostbolt, or 2 points in frost warding and 3 in frostbite (the remaining points go in elem precision, imp frost nova and icy veins). I'd appreciate any input from someone who has tried either or both. Thanks.

It doesn't really matter, its basically just filler points for IV.

Elemental Precision and Ice Veins are the only requirements. Fill in points to get you there.

You won't be throwing frost bolts, so it doesn't really matter where.

I was thinking of going with the same, not for PVP reasons, but for cases like Searing Gorge (where I am now) where some of the elementals are immune to fire.

if your leveling, your better off doing full fire or full frost (suggest full frost) with a touch of arcane (10 pts would be just nice).

2/48/11 needs some gearing up before the scaling comes to the fore. Without the gear to back it up leveling with that spec in mind would be a real pain. Not to mention that as a farming/questing spec, it lacks longevity and lasting power.

Yeah, pick a tree and stick with it till 70. If you like fire go though the tree and see what talents will make you quest faster and get all of those. End game specs are for... end game.

elemental Precision and Icy Veins are the no brainers like everyone else has mentioned. I used the rest of the slots for improved kiting skill. 2 points in imp FB(just because I have to get to five to get out of tier 1, the 0.2 sec increase is not a big deal). More important is permafrost +3 sec chill duration and +12% movement reduction is the best spent 3 talent points for a non-frost specced mage (other then EP and IV). And the last two into imp frost nova.

This allows you to kite just as easily as a frost mage and gives you enough time to work in your fire spells as well.
