Block valueFollow

I've always heard in game that block value was not that great in raid;
armor reduces hits by percentage while block value is flat, so big hits should be mitigated through armor.

But doing the maths between the Atumen's wrists and insigna ones, I had:
33 block value (43 with shield specialisation) on atumen's wrists and 0 on the others
more armor on insigna wrists, noted to be higher ilevel. Actually upgrading my mitigation by only 0.1%
This results in the higher ilevel wrists to be better if I take at least about 16200 damage in one hit (after all mitigation applied).

What the Hell?

Only stamina would be upgraded... I don't understand. My early epic gear gave about 600 block value, and all the big new stuff seems to be so weak... now at 317, and so much loots dance around me with no block value, it's madness.

Yes it is rather too hard for a paladin to stack block value, I think the idea is that when you first reach uncrushable you have about 75% block, 25% "hard" avoidance, for the better stuff you move closer to 50%+, and the bosses you tank hit for much more than your block value, so it becomes almost insignificant.

Still i'd like them to replace all this spell hit that I have with block value.

Block Value is still important, don't go TOTALLY knockin it. It's not the biggest deal in the world, but it matters.

You're losing Block Value as you get further in because you are itemizing for Paladin stats more. If you took gear that is of far greater benefit to a Warrior, you would retain a large portion of your Block Value. To them, it is a valuable threat stat as well as a survivability stat.

Block value is a great stat to stack when you are aoe tanking melee mobs. For Hyjal I stack about 600 BV, so those ghouls do less than 1/2 dam on a successful block(34% block% in that gear as well). But outside of hyjal i rarely use more than 350 BV, sometimes in ZA i'll use that much if i think the healers are having an off night, but normally i opt for the increased threat so i'm more mana efficient during the timed event.

What I didn't see clearly before doing the maths for that example is block value being superior to armor for mitigation.

When the blocked strike actually happens, those are the only two stats applying, and when I heard block value was not great for big hits, I thought items with greater armor value would be better... But what is a big hit? In this case over 16000 damage... 16000 actual damage is not the expected average physical hit even in HL raids, right?

so in itemisation I believe block value >>> armor.

I will compare other items to be sure but I'm expecting the same thing anyway.

I'd say the expected average physical hit is anywhere from 4000 - 6000, quite a bit more when dealing with bosses. To be fair, I don't really take Regular Hits anymore, so that is a Blocked Hit on Plate.

I'm not going to speak for this particular example because Block Value probably is the superior stat in this case. In general though, when you compare any stat to Armor it becomes an EFFECTIVE HEALTH calculation.

You can't simply say "Well, xx.xx% more mitigation from armor is worse than taking xx less raw damage on hits" because Armor and Stamina scale with eachother. This means that every point of Armor makes every point of Stamina more effective against physical attacks. If you gain both Armor and Stamina, you've compounded this even further.

When you calculate anything with armor you're not only looking at the size of hits, but also your HP. Sure, it's only a 6000 hit, on an unbuffed health pool of 18k.

How much Armor/Stamina have you gained while losing that 300ish Block Value? You're right though, it sucks to lose it :(
