So before I started WoW I did some reading into the classes, professions and how they all worked. Wasn't sure on some things...

I started Hunter, took up skinning...and leather working.
I'm now at the level in my LW to decide if I go Dragonscale, elemental, tribal.

But I'm not sure what to pick. Dragonscale because it is Mail?
Elemental for AGI?

As of right now I am a BM Hunter on a PvE server.

Or should I not pick any of the 3 at all?

I'm all confused on the ability to pick a LW path to go.

What says you all, Hunters?

You do LW for the drums. Although the epic BoP pieces are a very nice starter set.

My lvl 70 BM hunter is also l/w and didn't specialise until I looked at my IMBA scores and the Dragonscale top end stuff (Ebon Netherscale Belt, Braces and BP) put my score up by a good few points even beating the battleground stuff. Well worth specialising in Dragonscale imho.

Take up dragonscale LW.
However those items are not that good once you are raiding 25mans, until then the ebon netherscale set is really nice, once you are into SSC/TK or beyond you usually get better gear from bosses.
I took up LW after a long time having mining/herbalism. I took it for the drums only, and I think I'm not specialized at the moment :-)

Yeah, since your a hunter dragonscale is probably the most worthwhile, but it really doesnt matter. The ebonscale set is nice, but really only as a set. With several options out there for those slots, I probably wouldnt waste the nethers to make it. I think you'd be better off with vidicator belt and bracers in those slots and there are several options for the chest that are ez to get and are better, like the s3 chestpiece, http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=29514, pretty common craftable item, badge chest is pretty awesome.

Totally up to you. I actually made the ebonscale set and wore it for a while. Hell, I even kept the bracers for a long time for the socket to help meet meta requirement. Not a bad set at all, but alot of better options out there that are quite easy to get.

Yeah go dragonscale, the ebon set is going to be really nice even though some pieces are lacking agility you can make that up with other peices of gear and maybe re-geming a little. I personally still wear mine cause i have not had any luck with drops and i'm lucky if i get a good enough roll, but it's holding me over till i can get enough badges for upgrades or get a drop from SSC or whatever.

Yes, that thing is nice (especially since I do want some haste gear currently. I want to try 3:2 spam with a 3.0 weapon and some haste, the 3:2 macro is not working very well (at least I have to handtime a few things and I am still somewhat away from ideal dps) with my 2.9 bow and 0 haste gear.

However we have bad luck with patterns and the other raidgroups do not have spare recipies either (at least not the good ones).

The other thing is that it is hard to replace my T6 chest since I really do need the 4pc bonus. I currently have 6/8 T6 pieces which allows me to swap out the T6 helmet and pants for better gear. This chest will justify wearing the T6 helmet over forestlord, but then it is not that much better than the T6 chest.

All in all this item would not be a reason to level up LW, but as I already have LW I might try to get my hands on this pattern. Tanks a lot for pointing me to it, I somehow missed that thing.

Yes, go Dragonscale. I think elemental is more for rogues and feral druids.

One nice thing I'd like to point out is the massive amounts of gold that you can make as a leather worker/skinner. Making the various leg armor kits is a nice way to start making money to buy your epic flying mount and eventually when you get into ssc/tk you will probably pick up the 4 epic belt patterns like the;

  • wich easilly sell for 1,500g on my server. (that is with a 700g. investment if you are lazy and don't farm your mats.)

As a survival hunter, I never made the the Ebon set. The Fel Stalker. I'd even argue that this set would be better for MM hunters as well (never played BM, so I won't comment). Once you take into account the cost of the materials needed for the Ebons, that set just does not cut it IMO.

I know we wear mail and leather is a very poor cousin to be used as a supplement only, but I sometimes wish I'd gone elemental. The Primalstrike set looks nice.

Though, I just compared that set to the Fel Stalker set, and I think I'd stick with the Stalkers. I'd much rather have +20 hit rating over +40 AP. I'd even sacrifice a few points of AGI for it!

When did cost have anything to do with evaluating one item against another? That is the argument of the mediocre: "It costs a lot, I'll stick with my lesser gear instead."
Go with what's best, and damn the cost. Run a few more dailies if you need the golds or can't grind the primals. But don't 'take into account the cost', take into account improving on your gear set.
