3 (or 4) Combat Sword QuestionsFollow

I had three questions about Combat Sword builds. In reading the “Rogue Talent Build Review” thread (which is incredibly good btw) Demea recommends this build for combat swords: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fheboxZGcV0rVzxMGot and further down in the thread Theophany recommends this one: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=fheboxZMIVbbVzxMGot

What are pros and cons of Lightning Reflexes vs. Improved Gouge and Endurance vs Improved Kick? Is it just personal preference (since all the other areas are the same)?

And for the other two questions:
Could somebody tell me or point me to a post or resource the would help me (with my lvl 22 rogue) assign points towards one of the two above mentioned builds as I level so as to be the most effective at each level?

Building up to those Combat Sword builds from lvl 22 on up, what would be my go-to chains as I progress? I assume they might be different with grinding vs bosses. Also, with combat swords is there any reason to be starting from stealth with any attacks other than to pickpocket?

Thanks

In my (limited) experience, Demea's build is more of a PVP design, due to the limited use of Gouge and Kick in PVE situations. Lightning Reflexes might be kind of meh in the long run, but I'd prefer it over Imp. Gouge since I'm not real big on serious PVP.

Edit: I'm purposefully abstaining from your other questions, because you really need to figure that out for yourself to truly get a grasp on the class. Read the tooltips on the talents, figure out which ones would be most beneficial as you go. Don't waste your money on respecs every few levels to get the 'optimum' build for that level, and just go with the talents as you earn them. Only respec if you make a big mistake and click on one you really REALLY didn't want.

If you're looking for a level-by-level guide to spending your points, there's one in Osiris' guide, which is linked at the start of the FAQ in this forum. It's not the only way to do it, and if you're not bothered about money, you might prefer to put a few points in Assassination as you level, then respec at lvl 30 (for Blade Flurry) and again at 40 (for Adrenaline Rush). Those are game-changing talents, and you'll want those talents as soon as you can get them.

Imp Gouge is really a PvP talent - it makes the stun last long enough for you to restealth (5 seconds out of combat), but that only applies to PvP. Great for getting out of a ganking on a PvP server, for instance. Lightning Reflexes is pretty "meh", it'll just reduce your damage taken a little, but if you never, ever PvP then it's probably a better option.

Imp Kick is taken for the silence effect, which has a 50%/100% chance to prevent casters using the same school of magic for 2 seconds. Again, more useful in PvP, but has some uses in instances too, particularly pre-70.

For your opener, you'll want to be stealthed to use Cheap Shot once you have it, but with a combat build, it's not the end of the world if you just walk up to a mob and start whacking it. Doing that will increase your downtime, as you'll take more damage, but it's better than spending ages trying to sneak around to get an opener. Don't forget Slice n' Dice after you've opened - a 1pt or 2pt SnD should be plenty for single mobs.

As a rule, I think people worry too much about their end-game builds while they level. Take the time to try things out - as long as you get the key talents, you can't really gimp yourself too badly for levelling. For example, I loved having Riposte while I was levelling, but I'd never suggest it as part of a lvl 70 PvE build, particularly once you're done questing, because you shouldn't often get a chance to parry when you're in a group.

Have fun :)

Edit: Failed to correct Imp Kick mechanics - see post below :(

I love imp kick, 2 sec silence and 5 sec school lock. It is useful in PVE actually, say Kael in Terrace to slow damage, or kicking priest in Gruul's, imp kick goes through the bubble.

Combat swords is a PvE spec right now at 70. For L70 PvE, you don't need the PvP talents in the combat tree.

If you're leveling on a PvP server, you might want them ;)

Thank you for the replies. Yeah, I am mostly looking at Solo/questing/leveling right now. I am actually NOT all that interested in end-game at this point. I am a pretty casual gamer and it will probably be a long time before I am anywhere near 70. That is the frustrating thing in my opinion. 90% of the things I read about concerning abilities, builds, strategy, and equipment are all about what to get and where to go once you are at 70. What season gear or epic doohicky is the best doesn’t help me much right now. I don't have a problem just playing out the class and seeing what feels right, but I don't want to be seriously gimping myself if I don’t have to. Lots of people have put lots of work into figuring what the best bang for the buck is in many builds and attack chains and I like to learn from them. I don't think I need to play absolutely perfect to be happy, but we all like to see the bad guys fall and if I am doing something that people might see as a fundamental bad strategy, then I would just as soon avoid some of the long graveyard runs. Y'all have been very helpful and I will continue to learn from your excellent posts.

Maybe I should have read this before posting a new thread. *Smacks one's self in the face*. I'm also a casual solo gamer right now who has class jumped for over a year but never come to grasps with a rogue. I know I kicked a mock out of fear lol then after he came to I rendered him lol while still attacking...rendered him again...waved goodbye and finished him. I know if we were alot higher he'd school me. But I attacked first. I am a combat rogue not built for pvp...but will if provoked like i've said so many times before.

I know we bug you all with wanting help on figuring talents. But just want you to know I've learned so much by just reading peoples builds getting an idea. As for me I just wanna do damage to multiple enemies and be able to solo farely well. Thats why we bug you. :D

As stated: Demea's build seems more for mixed PvP/PvE action. For those who want to be potent pve but run a few BGs here and there.

Theo's linked build looks like a PvE leveling build to me. Lightning Reflexes and Endurance are excellent soloing/survivability talents.

Nearly all PvE rogues will respec for raiding at 70. So looking at those builds may not be optimal for designing your own leveling progression.

To strategy: Always open from stealth when available. Always.

Common rotation for trash: Cheap Shot, SnD, SS-SS, Eviscerate... profit.

Common rotation for bosses (pre-T4 bonus): Garrote, SS, SnD, SSx5, Rupture... profit.

Hope that helps.

Check my armory.

That's the endgame build.

Move the spec to swords and you're good.

Edit since I just respec'd and wowhead is down:

So your build is a end game raiding build. Awsome. But not 70 yet :D.I think i specced mine wrong starting off. But said that in another post. Went Imp SS first then 1 in lightning ref. Was told to put 2 in Imp SS then go for malice.

Take Imp eviscerate for leveling. And endurance rather than nerves of steel.

I've always been a fan of Imp. Gouge for leveling up. I tend to grab quite a few monsters at once (normally when blade flurry is up) and if I end up getting in a little over my head with the last mob standing, I'll simply gouge it and get a few ticks of a bandage in before finishing it off. It comes in quite handy.

I do the same thing ace. But for a combat swords rogue. Gg is not used by myself much. I usually just stealth pick pocket the whole group. Usually 3-4 mobs. I sap One of them then attack with SS,SS, Slice and dice, SS,SS eviserate. But I never get to fully use that cause well they die to quickly.
