Pally - engineering or blacksmithingFollow

Bringing my second alt up to level 70 (currently he is 52). I did a thorough respec yesterday to a purer ret spec, and that got me thinking about my profs as well.

I have mining and BS currently, and amy working on Weaponsmithing. TBH, it is a helluva grind compared to my first alt (alchemy and herbs). And when I look at engineering, there are some good purple head items at the end of it.

I originally took BS for the purple weapons that you can craft at the end of that profession.

There is a storng possibility that I will respec again at or near 70 to holy, since the guild always seems to need healers.

My question is - should I switch to engineering now? Are the BoE 'end items' of engineering going to be of more use to me as a Ret then Holy Pally?

Anyone have any insights they can share?

The best reason to take blacksmithing as a paladin is to craft the BOP epics for your Ret spec. Prot and Holy paladins are much better served by the epic goggles from engineering than anything they can make through Armorsmithing or Weaponsmithing.

There are a handful of good epic BOP tanking items that a Prot BS might make at endgame, but these aren't really make-or-break boosts.

While engineering can offer you a few pleasant toys while you level to 70 (including ranged attacks), there's next to nothing that that blacksmithing will craft that you couldn't otherwise purchase off the AH for less than the costs of mats.

There are three normal epic engineering helmets for paladins, one for tanks, one for holy and one for ret. You can learn and craft all three. Certainly the holy one is as good as anything you'll find up to T5.

I say normal because once you hit T6+ content - Sunwell Plateau - there are three more available, assuming the recipes drop.

The only other useful engineering gear (for a paladin) is the repair bots, but spec is immaterial for those.

I don't have BS on any of my chars so I can't comment on that. Sorry.

As a pally who can't use the guns, the only equipment you'll get out of engineering are the epic goggles (which admittedly kick major ***) and maybe a few of the funky trinkets. There are other fun things like bombs, potion injectors, the roflcopter, and the "free money machine", but nothing you'd really miss if you didn't have.

OK, thanks all for the input. Sounds like it is a case of 'better the devil you know' - I will stick with BS then as long as I am Ret-specced.

At 70 I may reconsider that, if I respec to Holy (although by that time, WotLK will be near, and I may want to stay Ret-spec to experience all the content.....)

Thanks again

I was gonna do engineering on my rogue, for the nice epics at the end. But someone made a point on the rogue forums (nostraa did). They are good but will be replaced by better stuff in S4, or even PvE content. I think that Blacksmithing will be better for you (my pala is BS). The Stormherald (final form?) is super sexy. And it looks like you will get more use out of it then the head pieces in eng. Unless you want the roflcopter at 70 aswell then go eng all the way.

If you plan on switching specs often engineering would be the way to go as you get a t5 equivalent helm for each spec. I use all 3 helms every week between raid OT'ing, raid boss healing(as prot spec) and the occasional 10man/5man that needs me to spec holy and pvp grinding as ret.

uhh, there is nothing worthwhile in BS for Ret. everything that is craftable can easily be bought or grinded somewhere else. Stormherald is only a couple pts better than Merciless Gladiator's Bonegrinder, Gorehowl, or The Blade of Harbingers. so after you get one of these, weaponsmith was a waste of time/$.

Engineering has some irreplaceble pieces/trinkets/items that will increase your playability and effectiveness.
