I have a level 31 Shadow priest alt. Gear with +Shadow Damage is appearing on the AH now. At my level am I better to focus on int/spirit, or is the + shadow damage gear worth it?

Really you seem a little low to start really worrying about +dmg, I would probably wait until your in your 40 or can get a decent amount of it. Also don't neglect sta as a corpse run will only increase the amount of time it takes to level.

Spirit is nice for spirit tap, int is a straight increast to mana pool and should not be neglected.

I found that while leveling up +spell damage gear was hard to find and I had to gimp my other stats to get it.

+Spirit and +Stam get you all you need to run quickly through the lower levels. +Stam lets you take some hits without worry and +Spirit fills your mana pool up quick when tap procs and this kind of set up lets you just keep going.

My priest is level 43. I started collecting +damage gear as soon as I got Vampiric Embrace, with the reasoning that the more damage I did, the more healing I'd get, and the more surivable (is that even a word?) I'd be. I prioritize in the following order: spell damage or shadow damage; spirit; intellect; stamina. I even take "of shadow wrath" gear at the expense of other stats, when I can find it.

It's working well for me right now, although, again, I am only level 43 and I expect the dynamics to change as things get harder. Playstyle-wise I tend to prefer not dying and killing harder stuff over never resting, but right now I don't have to rest either. I only eat to get food buffs, and rarely if ever drink (mostly only if I die). The lack of downtime is one of my favoritest (definitely not a word) things about this class. My mana pool does suffer from this whole arrangement and on long fights I might have to take a potion.

I'd say upper 30's or lower 40's is a good place to start, picking up a few pieces of Shadowcloth gear, the three pieces from the skelly boss in RFD, and the two pieces from ZF.

Yeah I think in my 30's and 40's I picked up some +dmg gear but mostly I was going for + stam and + Spirit...in the 40's I started to get more damage gear (read maybe +75 damage) but really didnt have any good equipment till I was in my 50's. If you can get any type of resist gear...like say the Elemental Raiment chest, that was handy to take the edge off of some of those nasty spells if you're a soloing SP.

I'm of the standpoint of playing by feel. If you feel that you're running out of mana quickly, get more int/spirit. If you think your health is dropping too quickly, get more stamina. And if you think you're not doing enough damage, simply look for gear with more +damage without sacrificing too many stats.

It doesn't really matter until you start min/maxing at 70 anyways.

In the late 30's and early 40's I picked up the tailored Shadoweave stuff (NOT to be confused with the tailored epic Frozen Shadoweave set). The set is quite nice for both Shadow Priests as well as Warlocks, and in fact my level 48 warlock is a tailor so when I decided to level a priest I was able to get those items quite easily.

I liked the tailored set better than any of the "shadow wrath" simply because while the spell damage might not have been quite so much, the tailored pieces have added stats such as stamina, intellect and spirit.

All of the pieces except the head can be learned from the master Shadow tailors. Those trainers are Jalane Ayrole for Alliance located in the basement of the Slaughterd Lamb, next to the Warlock trainers in the mage district. The Horde trainer is Josephine Lister, who is located in the Magic quarter of Undercity.

If you aren't a tailor, maybe you have a friend or guild mate that can make the items for you. The only somewhat tricksy thing for me to get was the Shadowsilk from spiders...however that can be obtained from some spiders in Dustwallow Marsh. One could couple that with the following quest:

To preview this set (scroll down a bit):

*edit* I forgot about the Dreamweave set, which is also nice too. I actually preferred to mix and match the Dreamweave circlet, chest and gloves with the Shadoweave stuff because Dreamweave had such a nice amount of spirit on it.

*edit number 2*

I had the nagging feeling I was forgetting something... The Felcloth tailored stuff is available for 50 plus. However, felcloth is a big pain in the behind to farm IMO, and is too costly on the AH. For these reasons plus that fact that those items would be replaced in a few short levels by far better quality quest rewards in Outland I stayed with my Dreamweave/shadoweave until level 58-59.

However, just because I am compulsive, here is the deal on the Felcloth set:
